Grinders:
We have two grinders available, a Wiley Mill and a roller mill. Both mills are located in Room 202. The roller mill is on the left side of the entrance hall and the Wiley Mill is located in the oven alcove.
The Wiley Mill is a bladed mill which we use for grinding leaf and twig samples to either 20 or 40 mesh. Samples of up to 20 grams can be ground with high product recovery. A 60 mesh screen is available for use but grinding time will be considerably increased.
The roller mill is generally used for soils. Soil samples are placed along with two metal roller pins into 60ML glass jars with rubberized exterior sheaths. The jars are then placed on the grinder rollers and set to slow rotation for 24 to 48 hours depending on sample size and type.
