PL 120 BUILDING THE HUMAN ENVIRONMENT     (3)

Comparative study of humans' efforts to control their environment with constructed shelter and infrastructure on global, regional, and personal levels.  Crosslisted as CM 120. CU

 

PL 201 INTRODUCTION TO PLANNING AND LAND-USE PRINCIPLES     (3)

Underlying principles for orderly environmental change in dynamic communities, zoning regulations, and land-use planning functions. SPW

 

PL 301 PLANNING LAW     (3)

Organization and procedures of administrative lawmaking within the context of the Constitution, common law, and statutes; formulation of administrative programs; cases in regulation.

 

PL 302 ENVIRONMENTAL PLANNING     (3)

Planning for the implementation of environmental regulations and quality-of-life standards by conducting a scoping process and site analysis project.

 

PL 303 DESIGN AND PRESERVATION     (3)

Introduces the history and concepts of urban and neo-traditional design, historic preservation, and American architecture.  Crosslisted as CM 303.

 

PL 306 PUBLIC PARTICIPATION IN PLANNING     (3)

Locational conflicts and values, planning dispute resolution, and community-participation techniques used in the public planning process.

 

PL 308W COMMUNITY LAND USE WORKSHOP     (3)

Land-use priority, development, and strategic planning; includes a fieldwork component. This course fulfills NAU's junior-level writing requirement.  Letter grade only. JWRT

 

PL 376 PLANNING FOR SUSTAINABLE TOURISM     (3)

Issues and methods in planning for tourism development from a sustainability perspective. Letter grade or pass-fail. SPW

 

PL 389 COOPERATIVE EDUCATION     (1-12)

Individualized preplanned cooperative employment experience related to your field of study or career objectives. Pass-fail only.  Fee required.  No repeat limit.

 

PL 398 MODULAR LEARNING EXPERIENCE     (3)

In-depth study of an aspect, concept, or problem.  Letter grade only.  May be repeated for up to 6 hours of credit.

 

PL 399 MODULAR LEARNING EXPERIENCE     (1-3)

In-depth study of an aspect, concept, or problem within a program of study. Letter grade only.  May be repeated for up to 6 hours of credit.

 

PL 401 PLANNING PERMITTING AND REVIEW     (2)

City- and county-level permit and review process for land-use planning. Prerequisite: PL 301 or POS 359 or International Student Group

 

PL 402W ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT STATEMENTS     (3)

Requirements and implementation of the National Environmental Policy Act, with emphasis on writing environmental assessments and impact statements. This course fulfills NAU's junior-level writing requirement. Prerequisite: PL 302 or POS 359 or International Student Group JWRT

 

PL 405C PLANNING STUDIO     (4)

Emphasizes the synthesis and practice of public planning through applied projects. 2 hrs. lecture, 4 hrs. lab. May be repeated for up to 8 hours of credit. Prerequisite: PL 431 and Senior Status or higher CAP

 

PL 406 PUBLIC PLANNING ANALYSIS     (3)

Use and evaluation of computer spreadsheet and database applications and modeling for public planning analysis. Presentation of analysis in graphic, text, and oral formats. Coconvenes with PL 506. Prerequisite: ((CIS 120 and CIS 120L and (MAT 110 or MAT 125 or MAT 125H)) or International Student Group

 

PL 407 PLANNING ON PUBLIC LANDS     (2)

History and process of planning as it applies to various public lands in the United States. Prerequisite: PL 302 or International Student Group

 

PL 408 FIELDWORK EXPERIENCE     (1-12)

Supervised field experience in an appropriate agency or organization. You must complete at least 6 hours and no more than 12 hours for the major before taking this course. Pass-fail only.  Department consent required.

 

PL 423 RECREATION FACILITY AND AREA PLANNING     (3)

Planning, design, and operation of recreation facilities and adjoining areas.  On-site visits supplement classroom principles. Prerequisite:  PRM 220 or PL 201

 

PL 431 COMPUTER MAPPING FOR PLANNING     (4)

Interpretation, analysis, and planning of land-use and cadastral maps, subdivision designs, and parcel development plans. Uses CADD to create maps and development plans. Coconvenes with PL 531. 3 hr. lecture, 3 hrs. lab. Prerequisite: (CIS 120 or CIS 120H) and CIS 120L and PL 401 and (MAT 110 or MAT 125 or MAT 125H or Math Placement 55)

 

PL 432 GIS FOR PLANNERS     (3)

Use of basic desktop GIS and its application in planning situations. Includes hot linking, tabular data management, data presentation, and cartography as an introduction to spatial analysis. Coconvenes with PL 532. 2 hr. lecture, 2 hrs. lab. Letter grade or pass-fail. Prerequisite:  PL 431

 

PL 485 UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH     (1-6)

Individualized original research under the supervision of a research adviser. Pass-fail only.  Department consent required.

 

PL 497 INDEPENDENT STUDY     (1-6)

Individualized approach to selected topics by guided reading and critical evaluation. Pass-fail only.  Department consent required.

 

PL 499 CONTEMPORARY DEVELOPMENTS     (1-3)

Examines recent trends and investigations in a selected area of a particular major field of study.
