ARE  200 FOUNDATIONS IN ART EDUCATION (3)

Includes quality components, state and national standards, lesson plan design and writing, the language of art, and children's artistic development.

 

ARE  231 ART IN THE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL (3)

Art education teaching methods, including integration, art content, building relationships between classroom teachers and art specialists. Intended for elementary education majors; may be used as an elective in art education.

 

ARE  308 TEACHING PRACTICUM      (1)

Observation of teachers in school art classroom settings. 2-3 hrs. lab. Pass-fail only. May be repeated for a maximum of 3 units.  Department consent required. Corequisite: ARE 421

 

ARE  330W CRITIQUING AND WRITING ABOUT ART (3)

Examines concepts and processes involved in critiquing and writing about art. Involves writing about and discussing art, inquiry, and context. This course fulfills NAU's junior-level writing requirement. Prerequisite:  (Admission to Art Secondary Education (BSED) or Ceramics (BFA) or Jewelry & Metalsmithing (BFA) or Painting (BFA) or Printmaking (BFA) or Sculpture (BFA) and Junior Status) or International Exchange Student Group JWRT

 

ARE  331 TRENDS IN ART EDUCATION (3)

Individualized problems course covering the literature in art education. Prerequisite:  ARE 200 or International Exchange Student Group

 

ARE  375 TOPICS IN ART EDUCATION     (1-6)

Selected topics in art education, including the study of leadership, advocacy, inquiry, context assessment, and other relevant trends. Letter grade or pass-fail. May be repeated for a maximum of 12 units, as topics change.

 

ARE  421 CONCEPTS, STRATEGIES, AND ASSESSMENTS FOR THE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL (3)

Methods involving teaching strategies, assessment of student progress, elementary resource materials, unit and course planning, presentation and evaluation of classroom teaching in art. For art education majors and minors. Prerequisite: ARE 331 or International Exchange Student Group

 

ARE  431 CONCEPTS, STRATEGIES, AND ASSESSMENTS FOR THE SECONDARY SCHOOL (3)

Methods involving teaching strategies, assessment of student progress, secondary resource materials, unit and course planning, presentation and evaluation of classroom teaching in art. For art education majors and minors. Prerequisite: ARE 331 or International Exchange Student Group

 

ARE  432 CHILDREN'S ART PROGRAM (3)

Lecture and practicum in art teaching under the supervision of an NAU art education faculty member. (ARE 432 should be taken before ECI 495C.) Prerequisite: (ARE 331 and Senior Status or higher and Cumulative GPA greater than 1.99) or International Exchange Student Group

 

ARE  433 CHILDREN'S ART PROGRAM II (3)

Lecture and practicum. Practicum in art teaching and curriculum design under the supervision of an NAU art education faculty member. Prerequisite: (ARE 432 and Senior Status or higher and Cumulative GPA greater than 1.99) or International Exchange Student Group

 

ARE  485 UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH     (1-6)

Individualized original research under the supervision of a research adviser.  Pass-fail only.  May be repeated for up to 6 units of credit. 

 

ARE  497 INDEPENDENT STUDY     (1-6)

Individualized approach to selected topics by guided reading and critical evaluation. Pass-fail only.  No repeat limit.  Department consent required.
