Develops understanding and enjoyment of the relationship of the visual arts to everyday life; encompasses the study of media, styles, techniques, and meanings. Credit cannot be applied toward B.F.A. degree. AHI

 

ART  101 INTRODUCTION TO STUDIO ARTS       (3)

Introduces the experiences of the two-dimensional visual arts through basic theory and concepts in a specific medium, with an emphasis on history, criticism, aesthetic analysis, creative thinking. May be applied toward the B.F.A. degree as elective credit. AHI

 

ART  122 COLOR THEORY       (3)

Hands-on studio course exploring the various color theories and their use in the fine and applied visual arts. 1 hr. lecture, 4 hrs. studio.

 

ART  123 COLOR AND LIGHT       (3)

The study of color vision, the history of pigments and dyes from Lascaux to present, the development of knowledge about light and color, and the application of theory to practice. 1 hr. lecture, 4 hrs. studio. AHI

 

ART  132 ANATOMY FOR ARTISTS       (3)

Investigates the skeletal-muscular system of the human body. 1 hr. lecture, 4 hrs. studio.  Letter grade only.  May be repeated for a maximum of 6 units. Prerequisite: ART 136 or International Exchange Student Group

 

ART  135 DRAWING FUNDAMENTALS I       (3)

Studio course. Representational and interpretive drawing, with a preliminary emphasis on linear construction, proportion, and perspective, leading to composition and creativity.

 

ART  136 DRAWING FUNDAMENTALS II       (3)

Studio course. Representational and interpretive drawing in various media, with an emphasis on composition and creativity. Prerequisite: ART 135 or International Exchange Student Group

 

ART  141 INTRODUCTION TO RELIEF PRINTMAKING       (3)

Studio course. Introduces relief printmaking techniques with emphasis on woodcuts. Open to all students. 5 hrs. studio.

 

ART  142 SILK-SCREEN PRINTMAKING       (3)

Studio course. Introduces silk-screen (serigraphy) printmaking techniques. 5 hrs. studio. Prerequisite: ART 135 or International Exchange Student Group AHI

 

ART  150 TWO-DIMENSIONAL DESIGN FUNDAMENTALS       (3)

Studio course. Explores art elements and design principles applicable to all the visual arts, with an emphasis on two-dimensional organization and color theory.  Letter grade only. AHI

 

ART  151 THREE-DIMENSIONAL DESIGN FUNDAMENTALS       (3)

Studio course. Explores the fundamental design principles involved in organizing three-dimensional space, with an emphasis on three-dimensional concepts and materials. AHI

Studio course. Broad-based exposure to the methods, techniques, and materials of jewelry and metalsmithing, with emphasis on jewelry and metals history and modes of criticism. Open to all students. AHI

Further exploring concepts, processes, and materials that had been introduced in Sculpture I.  These would include electric welding, basic model making and metal casting, gas forging techniques, and media assemblage.  Letter grade only.  May be repeated for a maximum of 6 units. ART  222 PAINTING FUNDAMENTALS       (3)

Studio course. Basic painting materials and techniques. Emphasizes preparation of canvas and other surfaces; brush and knife techniques; and pigment properties and selection. Prerequisite: (ART 135 and ART 150) or International Exchange Student Group

 

ART  223 PAINTING FOUNDATION       (3)

Studio course. Development of skills needed to exploit the paint medium, and exploration of modes and methods to express individual concepts. Prerequisite: ART 222 or International Exchange Student Group

Studio course. Emphasizes increasing skill in wheel techniques and glaze experimentation; glazing and decoration techniques; kiln operations.  Letter grade only.  May be repeated for a maximum of 6 units. Prerequisite: ART 161 and Corequisite: ART 135 and ART 151

 

ART  262 CERAMIC ART TOPICS     (1-6)

Regardless of topic, you produce clay pieces made for one of the following firing techniques: primitive, raku, salt glazing, earthenware, stoneware, or saggar, using gas, wood, dung, or electricity.  Letter grade only.  May be repeated for a maximum of 12 units, as topics change. Traditional and experimental watercolor techniques with emphasis on developing a high degree of expression; includes matting and framing. 5 hrs. studio. Prerequisite: ART 222 or International Exchange Student Group

All phases of firing different types of kilns, including the making of porcelain, stoneware, and low-temperature pottery.  Letter grade only.  May be repeated for a maximum of 6 units. Prerequisite: ART 161 or International Exchange Student Group
