ESE  380 INTRODUCTION TO EXCEPTIONAL CHILDREN       (3)

Philosophy and psychology of teaching exceptional children with an overview of educational practices.

 

ESE  389 COOPERATIVE EDUCATION       (1-12)

Individualized preplanned cooperative employment experience related to your field of study or career objectives. Pass-fail only.  Fee required.  No repeat limit.

 

ESE  390 TEACHING AT-RISK STUDENTS      (2-3)

Characteristics and needs of various mainstreamed special students who may be at risk, including persons with disabilities, gifted, language minority, and others.

ESE  416 FOUNDATIONS OF DEVELOPMENT OF THE EXCEPTIONAL CHILD       (3)

This course presents an overview of typical developmental patterns of young children and biological and psycho-social influences on the developmental process highlighting developmental patterns of children with disabilities.  Coconvenes with ESE 516. Prerequisite:  Admission to BSED Special Education

 

ESE  422 INTERDISCIPLINARY EDUCATIONAL LAB       (1-12)

Extended experiences with exceptional individuals; developing competencies of assessment, instruction, and consultation. For students wanting additional experience. May be repeated for up to 12 hours of credit. Prerequisite: ESE 423

 

ESE  423 ASSESSMENT OF EXCEPTIONAL CHILDREN       (3)

Evaluation of exceptional children, procedural safeguards, and the team approach to assessment.  Letter grade only. Prerequisite:(ESE 380 and Admission to BSED Special Education) or International Exchange Student Group

 

ESE  424 FOUNDATIONS OF SPECIAL EDUCATION: ED, LD AND MR       (3)

Definitions, characteristics, etiologies, legal and educational provisions for children who have an emotional disability (ED), a learning disability (LD), or mental retardation (MR).  Letter grade only. Prerequisite:(ESE 380 and Admission to BSED Special Education) or International Exchange Student Group

 

ESE  425 CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT OF EXCEPTIONAL CHILDREN       (3)

Basic special education classroom management with emphasis on behavioral and instructional management of exceptional children. Prerequisite:(ESE 380 and Admission to BSED Special Education) or International Exchange Student Group

 

ESE  426 FOUNDATIONS AND METHODS IN SECONDARY SPECIAL EDUCATION: ED, LD, MR, OI AND OHI       (3)

Applications of methods and strategies at the secondary level for students with emotional disabilities (ED), learning disabilities (LD), mental retardation (MR), orthopedic impairments (OI), and other health impairments (OHI). Prerequisite: ESE 424 and Admission to BSED Special Education

 

ESE  434 FOUNDATIONS OF SPECIAL EDUCATION: LOW INCIDENCE       (3)

Definitions, characteristics, etiologies, legal and educational provisions for children with orthopedic impairments (OI), other health impairments (OHI), cognitive impairments, multiple disabilities, sensory impairments, and dual sensory impairments. Prerequisite:(ESE 380 and Admission to BSED Special Education) or International Exchange Student Group

 

ESE  436 FOUNDATIONS OF SPECIAL EDUCATION: EARLY CHILDHOOD       (3)

Definitions, characteristics, etiologies, legal and educational provisions for infants and young children with disabilities. Coconvenes with ESE 536. Prerequisite: ESE 380 or Admission to BSED Special Education or BAS Early Childhood or International Exchange Student Group

 

ESE  450 METHODS IN SPECIAL EDUCATION: ED, LD, MR, OI AND OHI       (3)

Applications of methods and strategies when teaching students who have emotional disabilities (ED), learning disabilities (LD), mental retardation (MR), orthopedic impairments (OI), and other health impairments (OHI). Prerequisite: ESE 424 and Admission to BSED Special Education

 

ESE  454 METHODS IN SPECIAL EDUCATION: LOW INCIDENCE DISABILITIES       (3)

Applications of methods and strategies when teaching students who have low incidence and/or severe disabilities (mental retardation, autism, developmental disabilities, dual diagnosis, and dual sensory impairments).  Letter grade only. Prerequisite: ESE 308 and ESE 380 and ESE 424 and ESE 434

 

ESE  456 METHODS IN SPECIAL EDUCATION: EARLY CHILDHOOD       (3)

Applications of methods and strategies when teaching for infants and young children with disabilities. Coconvenes with ESE 556. Prerequisite:  ESE 380 and ESE 436

 

ESE  460 CONSULTATION AND COLLABORATION IN SPECIAL EDUCATION       (3)

Introduces techniques of working with parents, agencies, classroom teachers, and other professional personnel. Prerequisite: ESE 424

 

ESE  470 CURRENT PROBLEMS IN SPECIAL EDUCATION       (3)

Review of research, programs, and problems in selected areas of special education. Prerequisite: ESE 424

 

ESE  471 ASSESSMENT OF CULTURALLY AND LINQUISTICALLY DIVERSE EXCEPTIONAL STUDENTS       (3)

Course will focus on pre-referral procedures, assessment techniques and instruments, educational diagnosis, and placement procedures for Culturally Linquistically Diverse Exceptional (CLDE) students. Prerequisite: ESE 380 and ESE 423

 

ESE  472 FOUNDATIONS AND METHODS FOR CULTURALLY AND LINGUISTICALLY DIVERSE EXCEPTIONAL STUDENTS       (3)

Foundations, legal aspects, and educational interventions related to culturally and linquistically diverse students with special education needs.  Emphasis on the importance of native culture and first and second language acquisition. Prerequisite: ESE 380

 

ESE  485 UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH     (1-6)

Individualized original research under the supervision of a research adviser.  Pass-fail only.  May be repeated for up to 6 units of credit.

 

ESE  491 SUPERVISED TEACHING:  SPECIAL EDUCATION      (8-16)

Directed teaching in special education settings; planning, implementation, and evaluation; conferences and seminars in theories, issues, and practices. Pass-fail only. Department consent.  Prerequisite: approval by special education faculty members. Prerequisite:  Admission to BSED Special Education

 

ESE  497 INDEPENDENT STUDY     (1-6)

Approach to selected topics by guided reading and critical evaluation. Pass-fail only.  Department consent.

 

ESE  498 SENIOR SEMINAR     (1-3)

Integrates theory and practice, with emphasis on historical, contemporary, and future issues.  Letter grade only.  May be repeated for up to 6 units of credit.

 

ESE  499 CONTEMPORARY DEVELOPMENTS      (1-18)

Examines recent trends and investigations in a selected area.
