GLG  104 HISTORICAL GEOLOGY LAB      (1)

GLG  107 OCEANOGRAPHY       (3)

Geologic, chemical, physical, and biologic properties of the marine environment and the description and origin of ocean basins.  Letter grade only. SAS

 

GLG  110 ENVIRONMENTAL GEOLOGY       (3)

Relationship between humans and the Earth, including geological processes, pollution, natural hazards, and earth systems science.  You may take either GLG 100 and GLG100L or GLG 101 and 103 or GLG 110 and 110L or GLG 112 and 112L for credit. Corequisite: GLG 110L SAS

GLG  112 GEOLOGIC DISASTERS       (3)

Geologic processes and hazards affecting humans. Topics include earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, tsunamis, landslides, floods, subsidence, meteorite impacts, and climate changes.  You may take either GLG 100 and GLG100L or GLG 101 and 103 or GLG 110 and 110L or GLG 112 and 112L for credit. Corequisite: GLG 112L SAS

 

GLG  112H GEOLOGIC DISASTERS - HONORS       (3)

Geologic processes and hazards affecting humans. GLG  201 ANCIENT LIFE       (4)

Changing environments and the development of life through past ages as revealed by the study of fossil remains of the animal and plant kingdoms. 3 hrs. lecture plus lab experience, which includes field investigations and observation of fossils. LAB

 

GLG  225 PALEONTOLOGY       (4)

Principles and methods of invertebrate paleontology including classification, morphology, evolution, and distribution in time and space of fossil organisms. 3 hrs. lecture, 3 hrs. lab, plus field trips. Prerequisite: GLG 100 or GLG 101 or GLG 110 or GLG 112 or BIO 100

 

GLG  240 INTRODUCTION TO FIELD METHODS AND REPORT WRITING       (2)

Introduces geological field methods; emphasis on sedimentary and volcanic rocks, faults, and folds through lectures, labs, and field trips. Prerequisite: (GLG 100 or GLG 110 or GLG 112 with grade greater than or equal to B) or GLG 101

 

GLG  265 EARTHQUAKES       (3)

Introductory survey of the development of thought about earthquakes. Includes early ideas as well as modern scientific techniques applied to study earthquakes. SAS

 

GLG  298 MODULAR LEARNING EXPERIENCE     (1-4)

GLG  303 GRAND CANYON NATURAL SCIENCE       (3)

This class is an introduction to the geology, paleontology, climate, climatic history, and living biota of the Grand Canyon region - the natural sciences of the Colorado Plateau.

 

GLG  304 GEOLOGY OF ARIZONA       (4)

Geologic evolution of Arizona is interpreted from its rocks, structural features, fossils, and landforms, including natural resources and environmental geology. 3 hrs. lecture plus lab/field trips. Prerequisite: GLG 100 or GLG 101 or GLG 101H or GLG 201 LAB

GLG  306 MARINE GEOLOGY AND THE EVOLUTION OF OCEAN BASINS       (3)

Plate tectonic origin and history of the ocean basins.  Formation and distribution of sediments in response to biologic, chemical, and geologic processes.  Letter grade only. Prerequisite: [(GLG 101 and 103) or (GLG 100 and 102)] andMAT 125 and (CHM 130 or 151) and CHM 151L

 

GLG  309 MINERALOGY: INTRODUCTION TO EARTH MATERIALS       (4)

Overview of the origin, occurrence, and chemical and physical properties of common rock-forming minerals; mineral determination using hand specimen, microscopic, and other analytical methods. Prerequisite: GLG 101 or (a grade greater than or equal to B in GLG 100 or GLG 110 or GLG 112) and GLG 103 or (a grade greater than or equal to B in GLG 100L or GLG 110L or GLG 112L ) and CHM 151 and CHM 151L and MAT 125 and a CUM GPA of 2.5 or higher

 

GLG  315 PETROLOGY       (4)

Origins of igneous and metamorphic rocks; analysis in hand specimen and thin section. 3 hrs. lecture, 3 hrs. lab, plus field trips. Prerequisite: GLG 309 with grade greater than or equal to C

 

GLG  324 SEDIMENTOLOGY AND STRATIGRAPHY       (4)

Macroscopic study of sediments and sedimentary rocks, including origin, facies analysis, and basic stratigraphic principles and practices. 3 hrs. lecture, 3 hrs. lab, plus field trips. Prerequisite: GLG 240 and GLG 309

 

GLG  350W GEOLOGIC COMMUNICATION AND TOPICS       (3)

Scientific writing, critical reading, and effective oral communication centered around a topic of broad interest in earth science. Emphasizes conveying scientific data proficiently in writing and orally, with effective visuals. This course fulfills NAU's junior-level writing requirement. 2 hrs. lecture, 3 hrs. lab. Prerequisites: ENG 105, admission to the geology program, and completion of 17 hours of geology coursework, or instructor's consent. Prerequisite: GLG 309 JWRT

An application of the theory of geologic materials, methods, and processes to understand the interactions of humans with Earth systems. Principles of deformation of solids; recognition, interpretation, and representation of geologic structures. 3 hrs. lecture, 3 hrs. lab, plus field trips. Prerequisite: GLG 240 and GLG 309 and ((PHY 111 and 111L) or (PHY 161 and 161L))

 

GLG  440C ADVANCED GEOLOGIC FIELD METHODS      (6)

Gathering and interpreting geologic data in the field in complex sedimentary, igneous, and metamorphic rocks and in surficial deposits. Explores relationship between bedrock structure and hydrogeology. 3 hrs. lecture, 6 hrs. lab. Prerequisite: GLG 315 and GLG 324 and GLG 435 CAP

 

GLG  441 GRAND CANYON FIELD GEOLOGY      (1)

One-week field course on structure, metamorphic petrology, geochemistry, and geomorphology of Grand Canyon rocks and the Colorado River, from Diamond Creek to Pearce's Ferry. Letter grade or pass-fail. Prerequisite: GLG 440C

 

GLG  451 HYDROGEOLOGY       (4)

Aquifer types and hydrologic properties; physical laws and mathematical equations of subsurface flow; recharge and discharge; analyses of groundwater flow systems. 3 hrs. lecture, 3 hrs. lab, plus field trips.
