MUS  500 INTRODUCTION TO GRADUATE MUSIC THEORY       (3)

Review of diatonic, chromatic and post-tonal harmony, voice leading, musical forms and processes.  Fulfills deficiencies determined by music theory diagnostic test.  Does not count toward the M.M. degree.

 

MUS  587 PROFESSIONAL  DEVELOPMENT SEMINAR     (1-3)

Designed to assist in preparing you for entry into your professional arena. Pass-fail or letter grade, depending on department policy.

 

MUS  593 PUBLIC SCHOOL IN-SERVICE WORKSHOP     (1-3)

Topical instruction involving exchange of ideas, practical methods, skills, and principles. Normally you may count up to 6 hours of 593 toward your graduate program. Pass-fail only.

 

MUS  597 READING FOR COMPREHENSIVE EXAM       (1-9)

Preparation for comprehensive examination.  Pass-fail only.  Department consent required.

 

MUS  599 CONTEMPORARY DEVELOPMENTS     (1-3)

Examines recent trends and investigations in a selected area of a particular field of study.  May be offered no more than three times before being submitted for a permanent course number.  May be repeated for credit.  Letter grade only.

 

MUS  600 THEORY PEDAGOGY       (3)

Approaches, techniques, and materials for teaching music theory, including the use of computers and other technology.

 

MUS  603 ANALYTICAL TECHNIQUES       (3)

Introduces Schenkerian and pitch-class set analysis with appropriate application to the analysis of music in various styles. Prerequisite: passing grade on graduate music-theory diagnostic exam.

 

MUS  607 SCORING AND ARRANGING       (3)

Study of choral, orchestra, band, piano and ensemble scoring and arranging.  May be repeated for up to 6 hours of credit.

 

MUS  608 FIELDWORK EXPERIENCE       (1-12)

Pass-fail only.  Department consent required.

 

MUS  615 COMPOSITION     (1-3)

Advanced projects in music composition. May be repeated for up to 12 hours of credit. Prerequisite: experience in arranging and composing music.

A study of western art music literature and primary sources from all historical periods. Course examines issues, methodology, concepts, and music literature through a topic in seventeenth-century music.  Prerequisite:  Provisional admission or admission to the Graduate Program in Music.

 

MUS  627 TOPICS IN WORLD AND POPULAR MUSIC       (3)

Course examines issues, methodology, concepts, and music literature through a topic in world and popular music.  Prerequisites:  Provisional admission or admission to the Graduate Program in Music.

Teaching materials and methods applicable to your applied music emphasis.

 

MUS  642 CURRENT ISSUES IN MUSIC TEACHING       (3)

Examines issues of policy, culture, diversity, methodology, philosophy, standards, curriculum, and technology, and their effects on classroom music instruction. 9 hrs lecture during five-week summer session. Prerequisite: graduate status or instructor's consent..

 

MUS  644 FOUNDATIONS OF MUSIC EDUCATION       (3)

Studies the historical, philosophical, and sociological foundations of music education. Applies psychological principles and learning theories to music education.

 

MUS  646 RESEARCH METHODS IN MUSIC EDUCATION       (3)

Current research methodology in music education. Terminology, design, and analyses of variables.

 

MUS  648 CURRENT ISSUES IN ELEMENTARY MUSIC EDUCATION       (3)

Contemporary concerns in elementary music education, including curricular reform, early childhood education, cultural diversity, and the exceptional child.

 

MUS  661 ORCHESTRA LITERATURE FOR ENSEMBLE       (2)

Classification, programming, and performance practice of historical and contemporary literature for conducted ensembles.

 

MUS  662 WIND LITERATURE FOR ENSEMBLES       (2)

Classification, programming, and performance practice of historical and contemporary literature for conducted wind ensembles.

Choral music and composers from Gregorian chant through Early Baroque.  Instructor's consent required.

Choral music from the middle Baroque through the middle of the 19th century. Instructor's consent required.

Design and execution of a project that is a capstone for all work exhibited in program of study with an emphasis in practical classroom applications. Pass/fail only.

Individualized directed research, writing, and oral defense of selected thesis topic.  May be repeated as needed.  Required of all music history, music theory and composition, and music education majors.  Department consent required.
