NAU offers a pre-law program that prepares you for admission to accredited law schools. Our program is under the supervision of a university-wide Pre-Law Advisory Committee and is coordinated by NAU’s pre-law coordinator. Additionally, NAU Faculty members are active members of and participants in the Western Association of Pre-Law Advisors.
In keeping with the advice of law school admission officers and the law school admission council, we don’t have a “pre-law major” per se, although some of our degree plans offer pre-law emphases. In preparing for law school, you should seek broad knowledge in diverse fields and enroll in rigorous courses that develop your intellectual capabilities, increase your knowledge of society and its members, and sharpen your communication skills. Your choice of a major should be based on your individual needs and preferences.
Pre-law advising is highly individualized, so you should seek advice from pre-law advisors in the various departments and colleges listed at the end of this section. In addition, the Pre-Law Advisory Committee has published a statement on academic planning that has valuable suggestions about selecting majors, minors, and courses.
During your first semester at NAU, you should seek an advisor who can help you develop your plan of study and keep you informed about such pre-law events as visits of law school representatives, mock trials, internships, and scholarship competitions.
NAU has one of the oldest pre-law undergraduate sections of Phi Alpha Delta Law Fraternity International (PAD) in the nation. In cooperation with PAD, our pre-law coordinator’s office sponsors monthly programs and activities to acquaint you with the legal profession and the study of law. The application process for law school is complex and requires preparation. For more information, see the NAU section website at http://dana.ucc.nau.edu/~pad-p and the website for Phi Alpha Delta International at www.pad.org/, or contact the PAD faculty advisor Marsha.Yowell@nau.edu.
The Law School Admission Test (LSAT), which is required for admission to all law schools accredited by the American Bar Association, is administered by NAU’s Counseling and Testing Center. You can get information about the test and preparatory courses for it from your pre-law advisor. The LSAT is only offered four times a year. If you plan to be fully prepared to take the LSAT, we recommend that you see a pre-law advisor as far in advance as possible and at least one year before taking the test.
