This academic plan is designed for students who want to pursue a career in understanding and shaping the human-built environment and communities in which we live, including cities, towns, neighborhoods, and rural places. Planning professionals desiring an advance professional degree are encouraged to pursue this plan.
To complete this 36-unit plan, which includes a thesis, you take:
11-unit community planning core: GGR 681 and 687 and PL 501 and 531
6 units of public planning electives, such as PL 506, 532, 599, 685, 697, and 698
(Planning courses may be substituted depending on prior professional experience in planning.)
6 units of human geography electives, such as GGR 546, 574, 576, and 642
4 units of PL 608
(You may substitute coursework for this internship depending on your professional work experience.)
6 units of GGR 699, for the research, writing, and oral defense of an approved thesis
(Please be aware that you can only count 6 units of thesis credit toward your degree. However, you may end up taking more units because you must enroll for GGR 699 each term while you are working on your thesis.)
3 units of electives approved by your adviser from public planning, geography, applied indigenous studies, economics, liberal studies, parks and recreation management, political science and public administration
