ANT 501 FOOD AND CULTURE (3)
The nature of food in a cultural setting is explored. Food and cooking are extremely social providing an innovative avenue towards understanding culture, especially social and gender relations.
ANT 511 INTRODUCTION TO ANTHROPOLOGICAL FIELDWORK (3-6)
Integrated approach to anthropological fieldwork with varying emphases on archaeology and ethnology depending on the field problem. Letter grade only. Course fee required. Prerequisite: 12 hours of ANT coursework
ANT 512 ADVANCED ANTHROPOLOGICAL FIELDWORK (3-6)
Continuation of ANT 511. Appropriate to take if you have some field experience and wish to specialize in a research topic or methodology and to develop leadership capacity in fieldwork research. Letter grade only. Course fee required. Prerequisite: ANT 511
ANT 514 LINGUISTIC ANTHROPOLOGY LAB (1-3)
Students analyze their own linguistic anthropology data in collaborative laboratory environment. Those taking the course for two units make an hour-long formal presentation. Letter grade only. Course fee required.

ANT 524 CULTURAL RESOURCE MANAGEMENT (3)
History, legislation, and procedures of managing prehistoric and historic cultural resources, including archaeological conservation and mitigation, preparation and review of proposals, and reporting requirements.

ANT 550 ANALYSIS OF ARCHAEOLOGICAL MATERIALS (3)
Overview of lab techniques used to analyze archaeological materials, including ceramics, lithics, and floral and faunal remains.
ANT 551 QUATERNARY ARCHAEOLOGY (3)
Major events and theoretical and methodological issues of Pleistocene prehistory.
ANT 552 CERAMIC ANALYSIS (3)
Methods and techniques used to analyze archaeological ceramics to interpret technology, economics, function, chronology, formation processes, and social interaction.
ANT 553 FAUNAL ANALYSIS (3)
Analysis and interpretation of animal bones from archaeological sites, emphasizing both practical and theoretical applications.
ANT 554 PALEOETHNOBOTANY (3)
Archaeological analysis of the interrelationships between people and plants in prehistory through the study of archaeobotanical macroremains, phytoliths, and pollen.
ANT 555 LITHIC ANALYSIS (3)
Theoretical and methodological approaches to the analysis of archaeological lithic materials emphasizing hands-on experience in analytical and manufacturing techniques. Letter grade only. Course fee required.
ANT 556 ANTHROPOLOGY OF GENDER (3)
Critically evaluates evidence for evolution of sex differences, sexual divisions of labor, social constructions of gender, and gender hierarchies from prehistory to the present. Letter grade or pass-fail. Prerequisites: undergraduate anthropology major or minor or women's studies minor plus enrollment in anthropology graduate program or at least one previous graduate anthropology course.
ANT 558 ORIGINS OF AGRICULTURE (3)
Examine the differences between hunter-gatherers and agriculturalists, evaluate the theories pertaining to the origins of food production in prehistory, and discuss the areas of the world in which domestication occurred. Letter grade only.
ANT 559 INDIGENOUS PERSPECTIVES IN CULTURAL RESOURCE MANAGEMENT (3)
Introduces Native American perspectives on cultural resource management. Addresses three main questions: Who owns the past? Who manages the past? Who tells the stories? Co-convenes with ANT 459. Letter grade only.
ANT 568 QUANTITATIVE RESEARCH METHODS (3)
Emphasizes quantitative ethnological theory and method. Explores a variety of techniques and their rationale for designing and evaluating anthropological research with a problem-oriented focus. Prerequisite: statistics. Letter grade only. Course fee required.
ANT 569 ETHNOGRAPHIC RESEARCH METHODS (3)
Intensive, in-depth, direct naturalistic observation for the discovery and description of culture. Letter grade only. Course fee required.
ANT 580 MEDICAL ANTHROPOLOGY (3)
Advanced concepts and methods in the cross-cultural study of illness, healers, epidemiology, and the political economy of health and their impact in public health. Cross-listed with HP 580. Letter grade only.
ANT 581 LANGUAGE, POWER AND MEDICINE (3)
Cross-cultural exploration of power relationships between language, clinical encounters, and medical research and publication in which patients are healed or alienated and medical entities are socially constructed as real. Letter grade only. Prerequisite: ANT 102 or the equivalent and Senior Status or higher.

Examines recent trends and investigations in a selected area of a particular field of study. May be offered no more than three times before being submitted for a permanent course number. May be repeated for credit. Letter grade only.

ANT 603 APPLIED ANTHROPOLOGY (3)

ANT 612 ETHICS IN ANTHROPOLOGICAL RESEARCH (3)
Explores ethical principles and dilemmas encountered in anthropological research. Includes principles for protecting humans in research and a model for resolving ethical dilemmas in anthropological research. Prerequisite: graduate status plus 6 hours of anthropology coursework, or instructor's consent.

ANT 714 ADVANCED SEMINAR IN LINGUISTIC ANTHROPOLOGY (3)
Advanced theoretical and methodological readings in linguistic anthropology will be applied in a final research project resulting in a paper publishable in a peer-review journal. Prerequisite: ANT 614
