This 37-unit plan provides you with the necessary coursework to earn post-degree certification in English education so you can obtain a position as a secondary English/language arts teacher.
For this plan, you take:
ENG 528, 576, 580, 581, 583, and 689 (16 units)
3 units from ENG 523, 524, 525,and 553 or an approved literature course
3 units from ENG 503, 520, 521, and 522 or an approved rhetoric or composition course
3 units from ENG 504, 518, 538, 548, and 559 or an approved ESL course
12 units of elective coursework in English or education, with your adviser’s approval
Please note that to become fully licensed, you must also complete 30 units of professional coursework offered by the College of Education. You can count 12 of these units toward this M.A. plan. Also note that 12 of these 30 units are designated as ECI 595 (student-teaching) and won’t count toward this plan.
Candidates in English Education pursuing initial certification are required to demonstrate content knowledge, pedagogical knowledge and skills, and professional knowledge to be eligible to enter student teaching or internship placements. Content, pedagogical, and professional knowledge or skills are demonstrated through candidate performance on key assessments embedded in the ENG 580, ENG 581, ENG 583, ENG 576, and ECI 595C classes.
