Our doctoral program is broadly conceived for students pursuing a variety of academic and career interests, including secondary education, college teaching, research, administration, and public service.
For this 51-unit degree, which involves completing a dissertation, you take the following courses. Please be aware that your program committee must approve your program of studies.
HIS 600 (3 units)
24-27 units of coursework beyond the master's degree in both geographic and thematic fields of history
(You may, in consultation with your program committee and with the graduate committee's approval, elect another disciplinary field in lieu of one of these geographic or thematic fields in history.)
HIS 687 (3 units)
3-6 units of HIS 796, for an individualized internship in history or a cognate field
15 units of HIS 799, for the research, writing, and oral defense of an approved dissertation
(Although you can only count 15 units of dissertation credit toward your degree, doctoral students in history end up taking an average of 21-24 units because you must register for HIS 799 each semester while you're working on your dissertation.)
