This plan is for science majors who seek a position teaching science at the college level. This is a research plan, and the preceding one is an extended coursework plan in the same area. Please note that this academic plan does not result in public school teacher certification.
For this 36-unit plan, you must complete:
21 units of science content courses, chosen with your advisor, with most courses offered only during the academic year
These courses may be organized in one of two ways:
a content major, which includes 21 units of coursework in a single discipline
or a content emphasis of 18 units in one discipline
plus 3 additional units of coursework
9 units of science education or education courses, chosen with your advisor
(The two-term sequence in college science teaching, SCI 661 and 662, is highly recommended.)
6 units of research, including
EDR 610 and 611
or 3 units of BIO 698 and 3 units of SCI 699
a master’s thesis
an oral defense
