B.S. Economics (extended major)

To earn this degree, you must complete at least 120 units of coursework, which we describe in the sections that follow:  

• at least 35 units of liberal studies requirements. Be aware that you may not use courses with an ECO prefix to satisfy these liberal studies requirements.  

• at least 54 units of major requirements  

• elective courses, if needed, to reach an overall total of at least 120 units  

Be aware that some courses required for your degree may have prerequisites that you must also take. Check the courses in the appropriate subject. (You may be able to count these prerequisites toward your liberal studies or general elective credit.)  

Also be aware that you must complete NAU’s diversity requirements by taking two 3-unit courses, one in ethnic diversity and one in global awareness. These courses may be used to meet other requirements within your academic plan if you choose them carefully. Click here for a list of the available diversity courses.

Please note that NAU requires that at least 30 units of the courses you take for your degree must be upper-division courses (those numbered 300 and above).  

Finally, please note that you may be able to use some courses to meet more than one requirement; however, you must still meet the total of at least 120 units to graduate. Contact your advisor for details.  

 Major Requirements  

You must complete 54 units of coursework from economics and related fields, as described in the sections that follow.  

 Required Core  

 You take the following 21 units:  

•  ECO 201 (3 units)  

•  ECO 284, 285, 384, and 385 (12 units)  

•  ENG 302W or GGR 370W or PL 402W, which meet NAU’s junior-level writing requirement (3 units)  

•  ECO 498C, which meets NAU’s senior capstone requirement (3 units)  

 Economics Component  

• You choose 15 units from ECO 321, 325, 356, 420, 425, 445, 446, 464, 473, 480, 483, 484, 486, and 497

Please note that you can’t count a course that is listed both here and in an emphasis area for both requirements.  

Cross-Disciplinary Emphasis  

You take 18 units in your chosen emphasis area. These include a 3-unit required course and 15 units that you select, along with your advisor, from courses listed for your emphasis that are appropriate for your career aspirations and academic interests. You must choose these courses from at least three disciplines, with no more than 9 units in any one discipline.  

You may also take cross-disciplinary special topics courses that are consistent with your emphasis but aren’t on the emphasis list, with your advisor’s approval.  

Courses marked with an asterisk indicate there are prerequisite courses that you must also take. You should plan to take prerequisites as part of your liberal studies coursework when possible. Please be aware that some courses aren’t offered every term, and in some cases seats available to nonmajors may be limited.

International Emphasis  

• ECO 486 (3 units)  

• 15 units from GGR 240 and 241; POS 360* and 480*; ANT 301; HIS 325, 332, 344, 421, 425, 451, and 460; CCJ 315; and HUM 382

Quantitative Emphasis  

• ECO 321 (3 units)  

• 15 units from ECO 446*; CIS 120; MAT 125*, 131*, 136*, 137*, 238*, 239*, 316*, 368*, and 467*; STA 471*, 472*, 473C*, and 474C*; FOR 493*; and no more than one of CIS 220 and CS 122, 123, and 126  

Pre-Law Emphasis  

• ECO 480 or ECO 464 (3 units)  

• 15 units from POS 201, 230, 250, 254, 335, 352*, 445 and 446; GGR 370W and 371; HIS 494 and 495; HUM 376; PHI 103, 223 and 357; SOC 353 and 412; ENG 210 and 211; SC 111, 217, 318, 361, and 477.  

Southwest Emphasis  

• ECO 425 (3 units)  

• 15 units from ANT 301 and 306; BIO 414*; GLG 304*; HIS 293, 367, 381, 382, 385, 386, 413, and 414; SOC 315; SWS 250; GGR 546*; CCJ 415; FOR 250; and POS 220

General Electives  

Additional coursework is required, if, after you have met the previously described requirements, you have not yet completed a total of 120 units of credit.  

You may take these remaining courses from any academic areas, using these courses to pursue your specific interests and goals. We encourage you to consult with your advisor to select the courses that will be most advantageous to you. (Please note that you may also use prerequisites or transfer credits as electives if they weren’t used to meet major, minor, or liberal studies requirements.)
