Admission Classifications

We admit graduate students in one of three categories:

Regular Admission

If you fulfill all requirements for admission and are academically acceptable to both the academic program and the Graduate College, you are granted regular admission.

Conditional Admission

If you are not qualified for regular status (you lack prerequisites, for example, or some other deficiency in admission requirements), you are granted conditional admission.  Your admission may also be conditional if your bachelor's degree is not complete when you are admitted.

To change from conditional status to regular status, you must complete all admission requirements and remove all deficiencies noted in your admission letter. Your adviser or academic department should contact the Graduate College to request a change in admission status when you have completed the conditions of your admission.

Nondegree Admission

If you are not interested in earning a degree or you are not ready to apply to a degree program, you may apply for admission as a nondegree student. The application process is streamlined and does not require you to submit transcripts or test scores. For nondegree admission information and procedures, please visit our Graduate College web site. You can apply up to 12 hours of appropriate coursework taken as a nondegree graduate student toward a master’s degree, if the coursework is appropriate for your program of study.

The six-year maximum time limit applies to nondegree credit hours appearing on a master's degree program of study. In addition, because of limited class size and resources, certain academic programs may limit the enrollment of nondegree students.
