Orientation to the diverse merchandising field as a profession, emphasizing innovation and variables affecting consumer merchandise.

 

MER  135 MERCHANDISE BUYING      (3)

Basic principles, concepts, and industry practices specific to the distribution of apparel and related products.

 

MER  199 SPECIAL TOPICS      (1-3)

Foundations of intellectual inquiry.  In-depth study of a substantive problem.  Letter grad only.  May be repeated for up to 6 hours of credit.

 

MER  232 TEXTILES      (3)

Fundamentals of fiber, fabric structures, and their end use.  Letter grade only.  Course fee required.

 

MER  235 EVALUATING APPAREL QUALITY      (3)

Principles of garment construction, manufacturing processes, and quality standards in the ready-to-wear industry.  Letter grade only.  Course fee required.

 

MER  243 HISTORY OF CLOTHING      (3)

Historical development of clothing from the prehistoric through the nineteenth century, with application to modern dress. CU

 

MER  244 TWENTIETH CENTURY DRESS      (3)

History of clothing, accessories, designers, and merchandising organizations of the twentieth century. CU

 

MER  299 SPECIAL TOPICS      (1-3)

In-depth study of an aspect, concept, or problem.  Letter grade only.  May be repeated for up to 6 hours of credit.

 

MER  300W PROMOTIONAL COMMUNICATION      (3)

Planning, producing, and evaluating written, visual, and oral presentations for the communication and merchandising professional.  This course fulfills NAU's junior-level writing requirement.  Letter grade only. Prerequisite:  (ENG 105 or HON 190 or HON 191 with grade greater than or equal to C or English Placement Test Results (PLACE 60+)) and Junior Status or higher JWRT

 

MER  330 CULTURAL, PSYCHOLOGICAL AND SOCIAL ASPECTS OF DRESS      (3)

Emphasizes the cultural, psychological, and social aspects of dress.  Letter grade only. CU

 

MER  331 MERCHANDISING PLANNING AND CONTROL      (3)

Fundamental principles of successful budgeting and control of merchandise.  Letter grade only. Prerequisite: MER 135 and (MAT 110 or 114 with grade greater than or equal to C or Math Placement Test Results (ACT 19+; Accuplacer 50+; PLACE 46+; SATI 470+))

 

MER  332 MERCHANDISING PROMOTION      (3)

Principles and techniques involved in the promotion of apparel and related merchandise. Prerequisite: MER 135

 

MER  333 INTERNATIONAL BUYING      (3)

Role of import buying, including the buying process, trade laws and restrictions, and the impact of imports on merchandising. Prerequisite: MER 135

 

MER  389 COOPERATIVE EDUCATION      (1-12)

Individualized preplanned cooperative employment experience related to your field of study or career objectives. Pass-fail only.  Fee required.  No repeat limit.  Department consent required.

 

MER  399 SPECIAL TOPICS      (1-3)

In-depth study of an aspect, concept, or problem within a program of study. Letter grade only.  May be repeated for up to 6 hours of credit.

 

MER  401 TRENDS AND RESEARCH IN MERCHANDISING      (3)

Investigation of new trends in merchandising.  Focus on the research process as it relates to merchandising.  Emphasize developing abilities to interpret research and assist in research investigations. Prerequisite: Junior Status or higher

 

MER  408 FIELDWORK EXPERIENCE IN MERCHANDISING      (1-12)

Internship. Supervised field experience in an appropriate agency or organization.  Department consent required.  Pass-fail only.  Course fee required. Prerequisite: MER 135 and Junior Status or higher

 

MER  431 VISUAL MERCHANDISING      (3)

Studio course.  Principles and practices of visual merchandise presentation, including window and interior display and store planning.  1 hr. lecture, 2 hrs. lab.  Letter grade only.  Course fee required. Prerequisite: MER 135 and Junior Status or higher

 

MER  434 FASHION SHOW PRODUCTION      (3)

Studio course.  Historical and contemporary development of the fashion show, culminating in the production of a professional fashion show.  1 hr. lecture, 2 hrs. lab.  Letter grade only.  Course fee required.

 

MER  466 LEGISLATIVE INTERNSHIP      (1-12)

Supervised internship in the Arizona Legislature during spring term. Students are selected on a competitive basis, and you must apply during the fall term. (To be eligible, you must be a candidate for a bachelor's degree, have completed all lower-division requirements, and have attained senior status at the end of the fall term preceding the internship.) Course enrollment is handled by the associate provost for academic administration after the legislature has made its final selection. Pass-fail only.  Department consent required.

 

MER  485 UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH      (1-6)

Individualized original research under the supervision of a research advisor.  Pass-fail only.  May be repeated for up to 12 units of credit.

 

MER  490C PROFESSIONAL PRACTICES FOR MERCHANDISING      (3)

Supervisory and planning principles in merchandising. Prerequisite: (COM 101 and COM 200 with grades greater than or equal to C) and MER 331 CAP

 

MER  497 INDEPENDENT STUDY      (1-6)

Individualized approach to selected topics by guided reading and critical evaluation. Pass-fail.  Department consent required.
