M.S. Chemistry

For the 32-hour program, select an emphasis as described below.  Each emphasis involves completing a thesis.

General Emphasis

For this 32 unit plan, take:

• CHM 595 (1-3 units)

• CHM 698 (4 units)

• 18 units of courses chosen with your advisor’s and committee’s approval, consisting of at least 9 units in CHM and at least 6 of those units in advanced coursework (500- or 600-level)

• 2-6 units of CHM 685

• 2-6 units of CHM 699, for the research, writing, and oral defense of an approved thesis

(Please be aware that you may end up taking more than the 2-6 units you can count toward your degree because you must enroll for CHM 699 each term while you work on your thesis.)

Please note that 24 units in this 32-unit academic plan are graded.

Environmental Chemistry Emphasis:

For this 32 unit plan, take:

• CHM 595 (1-3 units)

• CHM 698 (4 units)

• CHM 520 (3 units)

• CHM 620 (3 units)

• 12 units of courses chosen with your advisor's and committee's approval

• 2-6 units of CHM 685

• 2-6 units of CHM 699, for the research, writing, and oral defense of an approved thesis

(Please be aware that you may end up taking more than the 2-6 units you can count toward your degree because you must enroll for CHM 699 each term while you work on your thesis.)

Bioorganic and Biomedical Chemistry Emphasis:

For this 32 unit plan, take:

• CHM 595 (1-3 units)

• CHM 698 (4 units)

• CHM 530 (3 units)

• CHM 535 (3 units)

• CHM 560 (3 units)

• CHM 630 (3 units)

• 6 units of courses chosen with your advisor's and committee's approval

• 2-6 units of CHM 685

• 2-6 units of CHM 699, for the research, writing, and oral defense of an approved thesis

(Please be aware that you may end up taking more than the 2-6 units you can count toward your degree because you must enroll for CHM 699 each term while you work on your thesis.)

Carcinogenesis and Cancer Chemotherapy Emphasis:

• CHM 595 (1-3 units)

• CHM 698 (4 units)

• CHM 560 (3 units)

• CHM 565 (3 units)

• CHM 566 (3 units)

• 9 units of courses chosen with your advisor's and committee's approval

• 2-6 units of CHM 685

• 2-6 units of CHM 699, for the research, writing, and oral defense of an approved thesis
