The mission of the School of Music is to provide an experience-based education, balanced between performance and academics, that leads to successful careers and lifelong involvement in music; to enrich the cultural life of the surrounding community through high-quality outreach programs, professional-caliber performances, and other collaborative opportunities; to cultivate an environment where discovery, creativity, and personal and professional development can flourish; and to value tradition yet seek innovation.

 

The School of Music is an accredited institutional member of the National Association of Schools of Music (NASM).

Undergraduate Information

The School of Music strives to graduate well-rounded musicians equipped to become successful teachers, accomplished performers, composers, and scholars in the competitive environment of the music profession.

 

You may pursue the following undergraduate academic plans in the School of Music:

Admission Requirements  

Students who wish to declare a major or minor in music must 1) be admitted to the university, 2) apply to the School of Music and be accepted through an audition in the primary performance medium of the major area, and 3) take a music theory placement exam.

Additional Policies

Non-majors who wish to enroll in lessons must audition to be accepted into the private faculty member’s studio.

 

Students who are enrolled in private lessons must be concurrently enrolled in a major ensemble, as assigned by audition.

 

To enroll in upper-division applied music courses, students must pass an upper-division qualifying exam (jury).  

Graduate Information

We designed these academic plans effectively prepare students for professional work or doctoral pursuits in the areas of performance, accompanying, scholarship, and education.
