This plan is appropriate if you are interested in special education. Please note that although certain courses in this plan may apply toward certification, completing this M.Ed. doesn’t lead to certification. Consult with your adviser for information about obtaining certification.
Candidates in the M.Ed. in Special Education (non-certified) program are required to demonstrate content knowledge, pedagogical knowledge and skills, and professional knowledge to be eligible to enter student teaching or internship placements. Content, pedagogical, and professional knowledge or skills are demonstrated through candidate performance on key assessments embedded in the ESE 625, ESE 655, ESE 650 classes.
For this 36-unit plan, which you may complete under the extended coursework or thesis plan, you take:
3 units from EDR 610, EDR 611, or EPS 525
3 units from EDF 670, 671, or 672
ESE 520, 625, 634, 649, 650, 655, and 698 (21 units)
(Please note that you must have advisor approval to enroll in ESE 698.)
9 units in one of the following areas of concentration:
high incidence:
9 units from ESE 656; ECI 531, 541, and 642; and EPS 606
low incidence:
ESE 554, ETC 548, and EPS 606 (9 units)
bilingual and multicultural special education:
ESE 601, 602, and 603 (9 units)
Please note that ESE 548 or equivalent is a prerequisite for this plan and does not count as part of the 36 units.
