The B.S. in athletic training prepares you to take the National Athletic Trainers’ Association Board of Certification exam. Certified athletic trainers are medical experts in preventing, recognizing, managing, and rehabilitating injuries that result from physical activity. Athletic training is recognized by the American Medical Association as an allied health-care profession.
NAU's Athletic Training Education Program is nationally accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education.
To earn this degree, you must complete at least 120 units of coursework, which we describe in the sections that follow:
at least 35 units of liberal studies requirements. Be aware that you may not use courses with an AT prefix to satisfy these liberal studies requirements. Contact your department for information about liberal studies courses that are specific to this major.
at least 83 units of major requirements
elective courses, if needed, to reach an overall total of at least 120 units
Be aware that some courses required for your degree may have prerequisites that you must also take. Check the courses in the appropriate subject. (You may be able to count these prerequisites toward your liberal studies or general elective credit.)
Please note that you must complete NAU’s diversity requirements by taking two 3-unit courses, one in U.S. ethnic diversity and one in global diversity awareness. These courses may be used to meet other requirements within your academic plan if you choose them carefully. Click here for a list of the available diversity courses.
Also be aware that NAU requires that at least 30 units of the courses you take for your degree must be upper-division courses (those numbered 300 and above).
Finally, please note that you may be able to use some courses to meet more than one requirement; however, you must still meet the total of at least 120 units to graduate. Contact your advisor for details.
Admission to NAU’s athletic training education program is highly competitive. We base admission decisions on:
the coursework you’ve completed
your college grade point average (2.75 minimum)
your experience in athletic training
(You need at least 80 observation hours under a certified athletic trainer, ATC, and completion of BIO 192 with a grade of C or better or one year under an ATC.)
your letter of application
letters of recommendation
an interview
a practical examination
proof of CPR for the Professional Rescuer
If you have completed (or have in progress) at least two terms of college-level coursework, you must have also completed AT200, HS 200, PSY 101, and BIO 181 and 181L.
If you have completed (or have in progress) at least four terms of college-level coursework, you must have also completed BIO 201 and 202, HS 229 or AT 229, NTS 256, PHY 111, and CHM 151 and 151L.
Upon admission, we require that you have a physical exam by a physician of your choice; show proof of immunization for hepatitis B, measles, mumps, rubella, tetanus, and diphtheria; and attest that you meet the technical standards established by our program and by NAU’s Disability Support Services.
Please see the athletic training education offices in NAU’s College of Health and Human Services for an application, or visit our website at www.nau.edu/hp/dept/exs/at/.
If you are a transfer student, you must submit a completed application to the Athletic Training Education Program. With your application, you must also submit syllabi for any courses previously taken that are required for NAU’s B.S. in athletic training. Our faculty then review your transcripts and syllabi to determine course equivalencies and clinical experiences and to ensure that you meet all competencies.
After you are invited to join our program, you must continue to maintain at least a 2.75 grade point average. If your GPA drops below the required 2.75 during the spring term before beginning the program in the fall, you then begin the program on clinical probation. This limits the hours of experience you are allowed in your clinical setting.
You must take the following 83 units with a grade of C or better:
AT 200, 201, 202, 229, 301, 302, 315, 320, 350, 360, 365, 368, 380, 385, 400, 401, and 402 (43 units)
AT 370W, which meets NAU’s junior writing requirement (4 units)
BIO 334, 336, and 337 (7 units)
CHM 151 and 151L (5 units)
HS 200 (3 units)
BIO 201 and 202 (8 units)
PSY 101 (3 units)
NTS 256 (3 units)
PHY 111 (4 units)
AT 497C, which meet NAU’s senior capstone requirement (3 - 6 units)
You should be aware that you may be placed on probation if your grade point average falls below a 2.75 or you receive a grade lower than a C in any course required for this major. If you are on probation, you will be assigned limited or no field experience.
Additional coursework is required, if, after you have met the previously described requirements, you have not yet completed a total of 120 units of credit.
You may take these remaining courses from any academic areas, using these courses to pursue your specific interests and goals. We encourage you to consult with your advisor to select the courses that will be most advantageous to you. (Please note that you may also use prerequisites or transfer credits as electives if they weren’t used to meet major, minor, or liberal studies requirements.)
If you plan to teach in the secondary schools, you must complete a teacher-preparation plan in addition to this athletic training major. For information about these requirements, see the heading Master's Degree in Teacher Preparation in Secondary Education (within Teaching and Learning) in the Education section of this catalog. You must work with an advisor from the College of Education to fulfill these 36 units to complete your M.Ed. .
Because the B.S. in athletic training is an extended major, no minor is required. However, if you complete the teacher preparation for secondary education, you should also complete a minor in an area of teaching interest. You should arrange this with your major advisor as well as with an advisor for the minor. You may use the units from your completed minor to satisfy the general electives requirements described earlier.
