M.A. Science Teaching: Community College (extended coursework)

This plan is for science majors who seek a position teaching science at the college level. This is an extended coursework plan, and the following one is a research plan in the same area. Please note that this academic plan does not result in public school teacher certification.

For this 36-unit plan, you must complete:

• 24 units of graduate science content courses, intended for the content major, chosen with your advisor, with most courses offered only during the academic year

These courses may be organized in one of two ways:

a content major, which includes 24 units of coursework in a single discipline

or a content emphasis of 18 units in one discipline

plus 6 additional units of coursework

• 12 units of science education or education courses, chosen with your advisor

(The two-term sequence in college science teaching, SCI 661 and 662,  is highly recommended.)

• a professional portfolio

• an oral defense
