AFROTC frequently asked questions

1. If I take AFROTC classes, do I have to join the Air Force?

Absolutely not! There is no obligation - we are here as a service to you so you can check out officer jobs and careers while you attend college.

2. Do I have to wear a uniform every day if I take Air Force ROTC?

No! Just two days a week, on Air Force ROTC field trips, and on base visits. Remember, we furnish all your required uniform items.

3. Is this a "guy" only thing?

Are you kidding? -- we have women fighter pilots! Leadership is not gender based. Over 30% of our students are women.

4. Do Air Force ROTC courses count for credit?

You bet! As general electives for most majors here at NAU, and we offer a minor!

5. What are the classes about?

They cover Air Force history, how the Air Force contributes to the national security, leadership and management skills, what it means to be an officer, and communications skills and techniques. In addition, there are a number of interesting and knowledgeable guest speakers from both the Air Force and civilian community. Check out the "AS Classes" link for detailed information.

6. Do you need a lot of math and science to do well?

No! Most of our students are in non-technical majors: history, business, criminal justice, education, etc. We are interested in you as a person, not your major.

7. What if I want to be in a fraternity/sorority or play college sports?

Please do! Our students are involved in all aspects of campus life -- it makes them better leaders. We also offer our own service organization, Arnold Air Society, and we sponsor numerous intramural sports teams.

8. What is in it for me?

The chance to develop your leadership and followership skills. The potential to serve your country as an officer and leader in the best Air Force in the world! We can also assist you pay for your college education. We have many different scholarships based on merit that help pay tuition and books. If on scholarship, tuition is covered and you receive a monthly stipend. Freshmen will get $300, Sophomores $350, juniors, $450, and seniors $500, with increases expected in the near future. We also offer you a chance to be part of one of the best organizations on campus where you'll make friends that will last a life time. And maybe most importantly, we will guarantee you a job within thirty days of graduation!

9. If I decide to become an officer, how long will I be in the Air Force?

For most career specialties, your initial active duty commitment will be 4 years. Pilots and navigators serve longer commitments because of the expense of their training.

10. How do I get more information?

Come by the detachment in Bldg. 47A or call us anytime Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM at (928) 523-5371. Or stop a cadet and ask them!!!
