| Students must have an emphasis of 21-28 hours. A listing of approved BAILS emphases is included in the 2001-2003 Undergraduate Catalog. All emphases include a Junior-level writing requirement course and a capstone course which are upper division and will be completed at NAU. | |
| A focus of 15 hours of an individually structured interdisciplinary or disciplinary program of study outside the students emphasis field is required. These courses focus on a common field or theme and are selected with the help of the students BAILS advisor. | |
| A communication block of 18-20 hours as follows: | |

| A combined grade point average of 2.5 or better is required for all emphases and focus courses (averaged together). A 2.0 grade point average in all work attempted at the university is required for graduation. | |
