Liberal Studies Requirements
for the 1997-1999 Undergraduate Catalog or earlier

Forty-three hours of liberal studies are required of all candidates for a baccalaureate degree. Courses must be selected from the approved list of courses, and liberal studies courses must be outside of the academic discipline of the student's major or minor.

A student, with the aid of an adviser, must select the 43 hours of liberal studies courses in such a manner that at least 12 hours of upper-division (300-400) courses are completed. The student may select, within the requirements of each of the liberal studies blocks, both lower- and upper-division courses to meet the requirements.  All community college coursework accepted in transfer will be considered lower-division credit and will not satisfy upper-division requirements.

Arizona public community college students transferring to Northern Arizona University under the 1993-1995 Undergraduate Catalog or later whose transcripts carry certification of completion of the Transfer General Education Core Curriculum (TGECC) will have the upper-division liberal studies requirement waived (12 hours). Completion of an AA/AS degree in and of itself does not lead to the waiver of upper-division liberal studies; only TGECC certification on the student's transcript will result in the waiver. Also, this waiver of upper-division liberal studies hours will not affect the total number of hours required to graduate. NAU will accept a maximum of 70 credit hours from accredited two-year colleges. Students will need to work with their major and minor advisors to decide the best way to use their elective hours.

Students who were enrolled at NAU or an Arizona community college during or prior to Summer 1993, and have maintained continuous enrollment, may continue with the liberal studies program in effect at that time or change to this program, which became effective Fall of 1993.

Many courses in the World and Cultural Diversity block are also listed in another block. Courses may not be double-counted; i.e., if counted in another block, the courses cannot also be counted for the World and Cultural Diversity block.

Many upper-division classes require prerequisites. Consult the NAU Undergraduate Catalog for any prerequisites.

Some of the courses listed below have undergone prefix, number and/or title changes, noted in [  ]. These notations reflect what is currently being offered at NAU.

ENG 105 (4)

Critical Reading and Writing in the University Community

The current English Composition requirement at NAU consists of ENG 105 (4 credit hours). Students are eligible to take ENG 105 only after completing 12 hours of post-secondary course work. Although NAU no longer offers ENG 101 and ENG 102, students who transfer to NAU having completed both ENG 101 and ENG 102 (or their equivalents) with a grade of C or better at an accredited university or community college will have met their composition requirement at NAU. Students who transfer to NAU having taken only ENG 101 (or its equivalent) will be required to take ENG 105 at NAU. All students have the option of taking a placement exam which may alter their English Composition requirement. If their score on the placement exam is sufficiently high, students will be given two hours of composition credit and be required only to take ENG 205 (The Writers' Workshop) at NAU for 2 credits.
