Click here for an explanation of the Fall 1999 through Summer 2007 Liberal Studies Program.

It is highly recommended that you consult with your advisor when selecting courses to fulfill your liberal studies requirements.  Some majors require courses that fulfill both liberal studies and major requirements.  Some majors also recommend sets of liberal studies courses that compliment the major coursework.

University Colloquium (3 hours)

UC 101 is no longer a graduation requirement for entering freshman effective Fall 2004.
The University Colloquium has been removed from the Liberal Studies program effective Fall 2004, but the 3 hours requirement is still in effect to complete a total of 35 hours.

-This decision was made by the Faculty Senate and the University Curriculum Committee.
-Students can take any additional liberal studies course to complete the 35 units required in the liberal studies program

Frequently Asked Questions

Can foundation and distribution courses be used to satisfy UC 101?
-Yes, foundation and distribution courses can be used to satisfy UC 101.

Foundation Requirements [F] (7 hours)

English (4 hours)

ENG 105 Critical Reading and Writing in the University Community (4)

NAU's English composition requirement consists of ENG 105 (4 hours).  The composition requirement may also be satisfied by successfully completing (C or better) ENG 101 and 102, or their equivalents, at an accredited university or community college for a total of 6 credit hours.

Entering students with high standardized test scores may take the composition placement exam (23 or higher on the ACT; 530 or higher on the SAT). For more information, see the section entitled "Placement Exams" or contact the English Composition office at (928) 523-6842. Transfer students who have completed ENG 101, or its equivalent, with a grade of B or higher, may take the placement exam. Passing this exam results in 2 credits toward graduation and entrance into ENG 205 for 2 credit hours (4 total). Contact the English Composition office for more information.

Mathematics (3 hours)

MAT 114 Quantitative Reasoning (3)

Students satisfy the Liberal Studies Foundation requirement in mathematics by completing any current NAU course (or equivalent transfer course) carrying at least three hours of credit with an MAT or STA prefix except MAT 101X, 102X, 108, or 150 (or equivalent), including any such course specifically listed as a requirement for a student's major or minor.  Students in majors that do not require a specific mathematics course are advised to take MAT 114 to satisfy their mathematics foundation requirement.  Students should consult with their academic advisor concerning what mathematics course is appropriate for their major.  Please note that the course used for the mathematics foundation requirement cannot also count toward the distribution studies requirement.

Distribution Requirements (25 Hours)

Students must take the maximum hours in 3 of the 4 variable (3-6 hour) distribution blocks: Aesthetic and Humanistic Inquiry [AHI], Cultural Understanding [CU], Science/Applied Science [SAS], Social and Political Worlds [SPW].

NOTE: For notification of Liberal Studies offered for a specific term, use LOUIE, go to the Schedule of Classes link on left side of page, type in the term and search by Requirement Designation (liberal studies) or by a specific Subject (discipline).
