What is SUN?The SUN (Shared Unique Numbering) System in Arizona is a newly developed college course numbering system designed to help Arizona students plan their education and ensure successful transfer of credits. SUN courses have unique three-letter prefixes and four-digit course numbers that represent direct course equivalencies for transfer to all three Arizona universities. Each institution retains original course numbers but uses the SUN to indicate commonality.
What is the Purpose of SUN?According to Senate Bill 1186, Arizona public community colleges and universities, under the jurisdiction of the Arizona Board of Regents, were charged with developing and implementing a shared numbering system which identified common courses that would transfer from community colleges to Arizona public universities without loss of credit toward a baccalaureate degree.
After approval of Senate Bill 1186, a statewide SUN Implementation Committee was developed to work with State Articulation Facilitators (APASC) to identify specific common courses offered at public community colleges and universities in Arizona. The courses were chosen based on curricular content, the Course Equivalency Guide, and the Common Course Matrices. 69 courses have been identified in Phase I of SUN with the intention of more courses to be added in the future with Phases II and III.
