University Colloquium- additional 3 units of Liberal Studies
Foundation Requirements [F]
Distribution Requirements - includes link to current Liberal Studies Course List

A minimum of thirty-five hours of liberal studies are required of all undergraduate students seeking their first baccalaureate degree from NAU. Courses must be selected from the approved list of liberal studies courses, and must be outside of the academic discipline of the student's major, as determined by course prefix.

The Liberal Studies Program is designed to help students gain the skills, knowledge, and abilities they will need to move into careers and to take leadership roles in our society. Because the Liberal Studies Program at our university is committed to helping students become involved in and take responsibility for their own education, students should, with the aid of an advisor, select 35 hours of liberal studies courses. Courses will transfer at the level at which they are taken (i.e., community college transfer courses will always be accepted as lower division).

The Foundation Requirements are designed to help students develop competence in writing, critical reading, and mathematical reasoning and computation. The remaining liberal studies credits are taken from various distribution blocks, which allow students to gain a broad educational base. Students who have completed the 35-hour liberal studies requirement will then complete the University Requirements, which consist of a junior-level writing requirement and senior capstone and will be satisfied through completion of major requirements. Students should contact their major department for more information about the University Requirements.

Arizona Community College Transfer Students with an AGEC
A completed AGEC will fully satisfy the NAU Liberal Studies requirements.  For more information about an AGEC, please see a community college advisor, or visit this website: AGEC General Information and Links.

Arizona Community College Transfer Students without an AGEC
Students transferring to NAU who do not have AGEC certification will have each course evaluated according to the Course Equivalency Guide in effect during the year the course was completed.  The student will be required to complete liberal studies requirements not fulfilled, as determined by the transfer course evaluations.  Students should work with the Undergraduate Admissions Office and an advisor to evaluate transfer credits.

University Colloquium (3 hours)

UC 101 is no longer a graduation requirement for entering freshman effective Fall 2004.
The University Colloquium has been removed from the Liberal Studies program effective Fall 2004, but the 3 hours requirement is still in effect to complete a total of 35 hours.

-This decision was made by the Faculty Senate and the University Curriculum Committee.
-Students can take any additional liberal studies course to complete the 35 units required in the liberal studies program

Frequently Asked Questions

Can foundation and distribution courses be used to satisfy UC 101?
-Yes, foundation and distribution courses can be used to satisfy UC 101.

Foundation Requirements [F] (7 hours)

English (4 hours)

ENG 105 Critical Reading and Writing in the University Community (4)

NAU's English composition requirement consists of ENG 105 (4 hours). ENG 105 and the University Colloquium work in tandem to offer students two seminar experiences during their first year at NAU. English 105 cannot be taken during the same semester as the University Colloquium. The composition requirement may also be satisfied by successfully completing (C or better) ENG 101 and 102, or their equivalents, at an accredited university or community college for a total of 6 credit hours.

Entering students with high standardized test scores may take the composition placement exam (23 or higher on the ACT; 530 or higher on the SAT). For more information, see the section entitled "Placement Exams" or contact the English Composition office at (928) 523-6842. Transfer students who have completed ENG 101, or its equivalent, with a grade of B or higher, may take the placement exam. Passing this exam results in 2 credits toward graduation and entrance into ENG 205 for 2 credit hours (4 total). Contact the English Composition office for more information.

Mathematics (3 hours)

MAT 114 Quantitative Reasoning (3)

Students satisfy the Liberal Studies Foundation requirement in mathematics by completing any current NAU course (or equivalent transfer course) carrying at least three hours of credit with an MAT or STA prefix except MAT 101X, 102X, 108, or 150 (or equivalent), including any such course specifically listed as a requirement for a student's major or minor.  Students in majors that do not require a specific mathematics course are advised to take MAT 114 to satisfy their mathematics foundation requirement.  Students should consult with their academic advisor concerning what mathematics course is appropriate for their major.  Please note that the course used for the mathematics foundation requirement cannot also count toward the distribution studies requirement.
