Program for Community, Culture, and Environment at Northern Arizona University

Assignment Title: Organizer for Civic Education, Public Space & Sustainable Economic Development, Full-time 1700 hrs.

The Program for Community, Culture and Environment @ NAU (CC&E) works to facilitate and enhance engaged learning and teaching at NAU and in Northern Arizona. Our particular focus is on enhancing grassroots democratic capacities of NAU students, faculty, and members of Northern Arizona communities. We seek to foster stewardship of place regarding cultural, community, and environmental common goods.

AmeriCorps Member Responsibilities:

1. Lead and Coordinate “Public Achievement” Civic Education Project at Killip Elementary School in Flagstaff. This will involve training, consulting, and coordinating several Civic Education Action Teams at Killip, training teachers and coaches, and working with staff at the school.


2. Develop a sustainable network of community partners to develop capacities for stewardship and development of public spaces, in ways that enhance public access, artistic beauty, community gardens, and parks. The network will include Killip, Sunnyside Neighborhood Center, Northern Arizona Interfaith, SLUUG, Foodlink, as well as public and private sector partners.


3. Work on research assignments for CC&E projects, particularly in relation to macro political economy of Sustainable Economic Development in N. Arizona.


4. Help write grants proposals that would support CC&E-Community Partnerships.

 

AmeriCorps Member Qualifications:

1. Experience with Public Achievement and Community Organizing.
2. Fluent in Spanish.
3. Knowledge of theoretical and empirical literature on grassroots democracy.
4. Familiarity with multicultural environments.
5. Willingness to develop grant writing skills.
6. Strong capacity for independent and creative leadership.
7. Good research skills.
