Program for Community, Culture, and Environment at Northern Arizona University

Assignment Title: Organizer for Immigration and Social Justice, Full-time 1700 hrs.

¬ Brief description of organization: CC&E works to facilitate and enhance engaged learning and teaching at NAU and in Northern Arizona.  Our particular focus is on enhancing grassroots democratic capacities of NAU students, faculty, and members of  Northern Arizona communities.  We seek to foster stewardship of place regarding cultural, community, and environmental common goods.

¬ Title of AmeriCorps service assignment: Organizer for Immigration and Social Justice 

 

AmeriCorps Service Assignment Description:

  1. Assist team facilitator Leah Mundell in coordinating the Immigration Community Based Action Research Team. This will include providing grassroots organizational leadership training to team members and NAIC partners, working with NAIC and NAU staff to coordinate team meetings, actions and events, and outreach efforts.
  2. Develop a sustainable network of community partners to develop civic capacity and engaged, participatory democracy in Flagstaff in order to address the issues surrounding immigration in Flagstaff and Arizona. The network will include Killip Elementary School, Public Achievement Action Research Team, Sunnyside Neighborhood Association, the Northern Arizona Interfaith Council, and other public and private sector partners.
  3. Research and monitor Arizona immigration policy. Identify opportunities for citizen participation in shaping current policy decisions.
  4. Help write grants proposals that would support CC&E-Community Partnerships in projects relevant to the issues of immigration and social justice.

 

AmeriCorps Member Qualifications:

  1. Experience with the Immigration Community Based Action Research Team and community organizing; willingness to further develop grassroots organizing skills.
  2. Knowledge of theoretical and empirical literature on grassroots democracy.
  3. Familiarity with multicultural environments and ability to work effectively with a diverse population.
  4. Strong capacity for independent and creative leadership.
  5. Ability to work effectively with a diverse, multicultural population.
  6. Good research skills.
  7. Willingness to develop grant-writing and fundraising skills.
