THE SUNNYSIDE ONE-STOP EMPLOYMENT & SKILLS TRAINING CENTER

NOTE: THIS IS A 450 HOUR POSITION FUNDED THROUGH RECOVERY DOLLARS. MEMBER MUST COMPLETE ASSIGNMENT BY APRIL 30, 2010.

Title of AmeriCorps service assignment: Sunnyside One-Stop Employment Specialist, Quarter-time, 450 hrs.

Name of organization:  The Sunnyside Neighborhood Association of Flagstaff, Inc. (SNA) – assignment will be for the Sunnyside One-Stop Employment & Skills Training Center (Sunnyside One-Stop)

Location of organization: SNA is located at: 2304 North Third Street.  The Sunnyside One-Stop is located at 2403 N. Izabel Street (inside of the Flagstaff Recreation Center)

The primary focus of this service assignment is community development, specifically employment and skills training.

History: Started as a neighborhood block watch over 28 years ago, SNA is a resident-lead organization that provides neighborhood-based programs and services to residents of the Sunnyside neighborhood.  “Enriching lives by mobilizing residents to create continual improvement” is SNA’s mission.   SNA received official 501 (c) 3 designation in 2000.

SNA employs two (2) full-time staff members and two (2) part-time staff members. SNA utilizes a volunteer base of approximately 150 individuals/37 businesses to assist in delivery of its programs and services.  Volunteer contributions in 2008 included: tutoring, life-skills training, youth/resident leadership development, community pride events and translation services.  SNA is the fiscal agent/program administrator for the Sunnyside and Southside neighborhoods US Dept. of Justice Weed & Seed Strategy. 

Established in 2005, the Sunnyside Job Training and Skills Development Center (Sunnyside One-Stop) directly addresses the unmet job training, skills development and employment needs of the community’s lowest-income residents (including welfare recipients, individuals with disabilities, homeless persons and ex-offenders). 6,500 individuals have utilized the Sunnyside One-Stop (programs/services) since it opened in April 2005. The Sunnyside One-Stop is open 5 days a week (two nights a week as late as 8:00 PM) to ensure that all residents have access to the job training programs/services provided and utilizes community volunteers (from both the public and private sectors) to assist with the delivery of programs/services.  

The Sunnyside One-Stop offers residents a diverse range of job (employment) training and related programs/services, including weekly employment training workshops and self-sufficiency/skill development classes (e.g.: finding a job without work experience, how to balance life and work, the importance of getting to work on time, dressing-for-success, etc.), one-on-one assistance with job search, resume and cover letter preparation, weekly job search and employability forums, access to a 8-station computer lab with Internet access for employment/education related purposes, local area job listings (hard copy), major employers’ applications, telephone, fax machine, copier, occupational assessments, computerized testing and basic computer skills training, and referrals to other community agencies for additional services.  
 

AmeriCorps Service Assignment Description: 

Ability to assist clients in conducting a job search utilizing the internet, newspaper and posted job announcements;

Ability to work with clients in the creation of resumes and cover letters (typing);

Ability to work with clients in filling out job applications and related employment documents; and,

Ability to develop and conduct basic life skills workshops (e.g., Dressing for Success, Balancing Life & Work, etc.)

AmeriCorps Member Qualifications: 

Must be able to communication well (written and verbal) with individuals from diverse backgrounds;

Must be able to utilize a computer effectively and efficiently (MS Word and the Internet);

Needs to be familiar and able to work in a multicultural environment; and,

Must be willing to work evenings.

Other:

The member will be treated just like any other member of staff and encouraged to attend weekly staff meetings and other events (e.g. office holiday party, etc.).  The member will receive a 4-hour “new employee” orientation that will provide information regarding the organization’s mission and vision, other programs and services and detailed information regarding the program that they will be working with.  Member will review job description, goals and expectations.  The Program Manager will mentor, train and supervise the member in all aspects of the assignment and will be available to answer questions and/or concerns.
