THE MURDOCH COMMUNITY CENTER
(WEED & SEED SAFE HAVEN)

NOTE: THIS IS A 450 HOUR POSITION FUNDED THROUGH RECOVERY DOLLARS. MEMBER MUST COMPLETE ASSIGNMENT BY APRIL 30, 2010.

Title of AmeriCorps service assignment: Murdoch VITA Coordinator, Quarter-time, 450 hrs.

Name of organization:  The Southside Community Association, Inc. (SSCA) – assignment will be for the Murdoch Community Center

Location of organization: 203 East Brannen Avenue (the Murdoch Community Center)

Brief description of organization: SSCA is a non-profit 501 (c) 3 resident-driven, neighborhood-based organization whose mission is to “Promote the culture, vitality and legacy of the Southside Neighborhood”.

Since its inception in October 2004 SSCA has been diligently working on preserving the unique character of the Southside neighborhood while expanding economic, educational and recreational opportunities for all residents.  SSCA received official 501 (c) 3 designation in 2005. SSCA employs one (1) full-time staff member and three (3) part-time staff members. SSCA utilizes a volunteer base of over 61 individuals/5 businesses to assist in delivery of its programs and services.  Volunteer contributions in 2008 included: after-school tutoring for teens, computer access and basic training for seniors, youth civic leadership training & development, community pride events, neighborhood clean-ups, community garden maintenance, low-income tax preparation and translation services. 

The primary focus of this service assignment is community development, specifically organizational capacity-building. 

AmeriCorps Service Assignment Description:

Needs to be able to be trained to complete basic tax returns for lower-income individuals during the upcoming tax season (December 2009 through March 2010)

Must be computer literate (able to using MS Word and the Internet well)

Must be able to work well with diverse individuals (ethnic background, race and income-levels)

Must be able to complete basic reporting requirements (e.g. number of people served, etc.)

Must be able to conduct outreach reaching the VITA program (e.g. walking the neighborhood, taking program flyers door-to-door)

AmeriCorps Member Qualifications: 

Must be able to communication well (written and verbal) with individuals from diverse backgrounds;

Must be able to utilize a computer effectively and efficiently (MS Word and the Internet);

Needs to be familiar and able to work in a multicultural environment; and,

Must be willing to work evenings.
