LeaderCorps Opportunity
LeaderCorps consists of
AmeriCorps members from around the state. The program is designed to
strengthen one's leadership and communication skills.
As a LeaderCorps Member,
you will plan the 15th Annual Governor’s Conference on Service and
Volunteerism which takes place in Flagstaff. You may also organize
events surrounding AmeriCorps week.
As a Member of
LeaderCorps you are joining a team and taking part in producing real
results on a specific timeline.
Below is a personal
story written by a Member who participated in LeaderCorps....
"When I applied to
LeaderCorps, I did so with great hesitancy. Part of me doubted my
ability to plan a state-wide conference for a few hundred people and the
other part of me, the one that eventually won out, said that I should
stop being afraid, have some confidence in myself, and turn in the
application. So that’s what I did, and soon afterwards, I was informed
that I was accepted into the program. Now my nerves really began….
The first thing we did as LeaderCorps members was go on a retreat. I had
to prepare my introverted self to ‘be stuck’ with complete strangers for
several days. But the LeaderCorps staff did a great job at making people
feel at home. We did a lot of team-building activities and leadership
trainings. I was soon put at ease and I quickly realized that, just like
me, almost none of the other LeaderCorps members had any experience in
running an event like a conference. So we were all in the same boat!
The staff had us divide ourselves into committees, each person getting
to choose his or her best fit. I chose the Service Project Committee.
Throughout the next few months, I worked with my fellow committee
members, a staff member who acted as our coach, and different Flagstaff
organizations to design the service projects for that year’s conference.
We did this through emails, conference calls, and more retreats. It was
a wonderful experience! I not only was able to meet a lot of really neat
people from all over the state, I gained valuable skills and a new sense
of confidence that I still draw from today."
