Brief description of organization:

Wide range of services available to Juvenile Court-referred youth and their families to increase ability of youth to achieve success, reduce juvenile delinquency, and promote citizen safety; community-based prevention efforts based on Developmental Assets

This position’s primary area of responsibility is to assist the Prevention and Mentoring Supervisor with Asset-building projects in Flagstaff and Williams. The 40 Developmental Assets initiative is a community-based effort to give all young people in this area as many opportunities as possible to experience the Assets in their lives. The Assets are concrete, positive factors, qualities, values, and skills which are essential for the healthy development of children and teens

AmeriCorps Service Assignment Description:

1. Engage in planning and implementation of Flagstaff PAWS project, a public art and community education effort based on Developmental Assets;

2. Write Flagstaff PAWS newsletter and updates;

3. With mentor, identify community sector(s) and groups to target in order to educate them about the Assets framework and strengths-based concepts related to young people;

4. Provide interactive training on Assets to targeted groups and individuals, in conjunction with mentor as needed and eventually independently;

5. Track contacts, presentations, progress, and Asset-building success stories, updating supervisor weekly;

6. Participate in community events to provide information to the public about Assets;

7. May assist with Juvenile Court mentoring programs in Coconino County;

8. May assist with Children of Incarcerated Parents Task Force assessment project;

9. Perform other related duties as assigned, including working with other Juvenile Court staff, such as assisting with Step Up programming activities.


AmeriCorps Member Qualifications:

1. Interest in being part of a positive community change effort to create opportunities for all young people to grow up caring, healthy, and responsible in Coconino County.

2. Must have strong communication skills—especially in the areas of listening well, explaining information clearly, business writing, and nurturing positive relationships with many different types of people.

3. Must have high ethical standards and model Asset-building behaviors and attitudes.

4. Must be self-motivated and enjoy working independently while maintaining regular communication with mentor.

5. Skills in planning, organizing, and actively participating in meetings helpful.
6. Interest in practicing and performing public speaking.

7. Skills and/or interest in social marketing useful.

8. Computer skills, especially PowerPoint, e-mail, and word processing.

9. Will need to travel within Flagstaff to accomplish duties and possibly to outlying areas such as Williams or Page (mileage reimbursement available outside Flagstaff).

10. Will share office space with mentor.
