Grand Canyon Youth

¬ Title of AmeriCorps service assignment:
Grand Canyon Youth Corps Project Assistant
Full-time, 1700 hrs.

¬ Location of organization: 5th & Main in Sunnyside

¬ Brief description of organization: Grand Canyon Youth is a non-profit organization whose mission is to provide experiential education to middle and high school students along the rivers and canyons of the Southwest in order to promote teamwork, community involvement, environmental awareness and personal growth.  In addition to our river education programs we currently facilitate 3 service learning clubs at local schools called Grand Canyon Youth Corps (GCYC).  These clubs complete volunteer projects as well as plan and facilitate service projects in the community.

AmeriCorps Service Assignment Description:

1. Assists in facilitating GCYC service learning clubs.

2. Assists in supervising and facilitating volunteer projects for GCYC clubs.

3. Assists in planning and reflection of volunteer and service learning projects.

4. Assists with evaluation and documentation GCYC club activities.

5. Works with community organizations to plan and implement volunteer and service learning projects.

6. Assists in curriculum development for the GCYC program.

7. Assists with other projects at Grand Canyon Youth as needed.

AmeriCorps Member Qualifications:

1. Strong organizational skills.

2. Ability to work independently with little supervision.

3. Communicates well with young people, teachers, and community partners.

4. Previous experience working as a volunteer.

5. Previous experience working with youth.

6. Previous service-learning experience a plus.

7. Ability to facilitate youth through a creative process and assist them in reaching their goals.

8. Availability on some evenings and weekends.

9. Understanding of the process of reflection.

10. Creativity and enthusiasm for community service.
