EmPACT Family Literacy offers many educational opportunities for
families. Opportunities include parent and child interactive
activities, parent training, preparing the child for a successful
education, adult literacy training for self-sufficiency and most
importantly, establish the parent’s role as the child’s primary teacher.
AmeriCorps Service Assignment Description:
1. Work with adults in small groups and one-on-one, learning English or
GED skills.
2. Plan lessons in collaboration with the certified adult education
instructor.
3. Assist adult educator in daily routines and procedures.
4. Participate in all aspects of family literacy program: Adult
Education, Parent Education, Home-Based Instruction, Interactive
Literacy Activities (parents and children together at school), Preschool
Education.
5. Accompany EmPACT staff members on monthly visits to the homes of
families enrolled in the program (Home-Based Instruction component).
6. Collaborate with EmPACT partnership representatives (i.e.: Head
Start)
7. Other projects may include: planning family activities that promote
literacy, organizing field trips for families that support units covered
in class, etc.
AmeriCorps Member Qualifications:
1. Committed
and dependable.
2. Strong communication skills.
3. Works well on a team.
4. Familiarity with multicultural environments.
5. Good people skills (i.e.: able to interact with professionals,
co-workers, parents, students, etc.)
6. Computer skills to include: Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Internet
Explorer, E-mail.
7. Spanish skills preferred but not required.
8. Available to work Monday-Friday, 8:30-1:30.
