¬ Brief description of organization:
EmPACT, or Empowering Parents and Children Together, is a unique
preschool and family literacy program which has been operating at Killip
Elementary School for more than a decade. Families are identified for
service based on the following general criteria: (1) a child age 3 or 4
who needs preschool programming, and (2) at least one adult family
member who is a limited or non-English speaker AND/OR did not graduate
from high school or receive a GED. Classes are provided Monday through
Thursday on the Killip campus, with the 3 and 4 year-olds attending a
licensed and accredited preschool program while the adult family
member(s) simultaneously attend an adult education class. Services for
adults are targeted to their individual need and include: tutoring to
prepare for passage of either the Spanish or English GED and English
language classes for limited or non-English speakers. All adult
participants also participate in service learning/community service,
parenting classes, and interactive literacy activities with their
preschool child. Home visits are also a crucial component of the
programming. (The staff includes a preschool teacher and a
Spanish-speaking adult educator who are both employees of FUSD.
Additionally, the preschool has a co-teacher who is an employee of Head
Start. We are looking for an AmeriCorps volunteer who could assist with
English language development and, particularly, work one-on-one and in
small groups with those who are working toward successful passage of the
English GED.)
