AmeriCorps History
National AmeriCorps History:
AmeriCorps is a network of national
service programs that engage more than 50,000 Americans each
year in intensive
service to meet critical needs in education, public safety, health, and the
environment.
AmeriCorps members serve through more than 2,100 nonprofits,
public agencies, and faith-based
organizations. They tutor and mentor youth,
build affordable housing, teach computer skills, clean parks
and streams, run
after-school programs, and help communities respond to disasters. Created in
1993,
AmeriCorps is part of the Corporation for National and Community
Service, which also oversees Senior
Corps and Learn and Serve America.
Together these programs engage more than 2 million Americans
of all ages and
backgrounds in service each year.
National AmeriCorps Overview:
Since 1994, more than 250,000 men and women have served in AmeriCorps,
providing needed
assistance to millions of Americans. AmeriCorps provides
trained, dedicated people to help nonprofits
accomplish more and make more
effective use of volunteers. President Bush has asked AmeriCorps to
expand its
work in public safety, public health, and disaster relief to assist in
homeland security. The
President has also proposed expanding AmeriCorps as
part of his USA Freedom Corps initiative.
AmeriCorps is made up of three
programs: AmeriCorps*State and National, AmeriCorps*Direct,
AmeriCorps*VISTA, and AmeriCorps *National Civilian Community Corps (NCCC).
YiA
AmeriCorps Program History:
YiA AmeriCorps is a greater Flagstaff
Community Joint Agency Youth Service Initiative designed to
provide a
mechanism for participating agencies and organizations to pool resources and
maximize
services and opportunities for youth and young adults. YiA AmeriCorps will facilitate coordinated,
proactive solutions to the
youth-oriented problems facing the greater Flagstaff community through
better
coordination of services, enhancement of current programs, and development of
new programs.
YiA
AmeriCorps is the longest running and largest AmeriCorps Program in Arizona,
being established in 1994.
We are in
our tenth year and are using the wisdom of a long standing program to better
serve our
Members and the community.
Initiative Highlights:
An agreement was entered into
between the Flagstaff Unified School District, Northern Arizona
University,
Coconino County, City of Flagstaff and Coconino Community College creating
a
partnership to form the Alliance for a Second Century, a coalition for
cooperative action focusing
on the future of the greater Flagstaff community.
Of primary concern to the citizens of this region
is the growth and development
of our young people. To address this concern the Alliance for a
Second
Century is committed to fostering positive growth and development of Flagstaff
youth;
therefore, they established a Flagstaff Area Joint Youth Service
Initiative (Youth in Action), whose
responsibility is to seek opportunities
for youth to develop citizenship and life skills while volunteering
service
to our community.
