Engelmann Spruce
Picea engelmannii
Arizona Native
A large-sized tree, the Engelmann spruce grows 100 feet tall and has a life span of 300 years. The largest Engelmann spruce measured is in Olympic National Park and is 156 feet tall, with a circumference of 22 feet, 1 inch. It often grows in association with sub-alpine and corkbark fir in Arizona at elevations from 9,500 to 11, 500 feet. It grows best on high-moisture sites and is intolerant of long, hot, and dry periods.
Engelmann spruce is valued as a Christmas tree. Native American use it for ceremonial purposes. The soft wood is of limited use as lumber.
