Norway Spruce
Picea abies
It is hard to imagine that this delicate-looking spruce can obtain heights of over 200 feet in its native range in northern and eastern Europe. The largest measured tree in the U.S. is in New Hampshire and is 108 feet tall and 15 feet, 5 inches around.
Norway spruce is the most valuable timber species in Europe for both timber and pulp. In the U.S. it is widely used in windbreaks, for Christmas trees, and as ornamentals. Because it has been so widely planted in the U.S., it has become naturalized from Connecticut to Michigan and probably elsewhere.
