Sycamore Maple
Acer pseudoplatanus
This deciduous hardwood is native to Europe and Western Asia. This particular tree is probably unique in Flagstaff and is a handsome ornamental with its dark green leaves contrasting with the Moenkopi sandstone of Friar Hall.
Several horticultural varieties with different leaf and samara (seed pod) colorings are available. One variety, Gold Fleck, exhibits leaves that are spotted, or flecked, with gold. Planted in the right location, a sycamore maple can grow to over 100 feet in height, with a tree crown over 80 feet wide.
