Module 4:  Molecular Genetics

Laboratory 12:  Gel electrophoresis of DNA and analysis of gel results

During this laboratory, you will have the opportunity to use the gel electrophoresis techniques you learned last week to analyze DNA that has been obtained from a very well studied virus (called Lambda), that infects the bacterium Esherichia coli.  You will work with some samples of DNA that have not been cut with restriction enzymes and other samples that have been fragmented using either the restriction enzyme EcoR1 or HindIII.  While your gel is running you will learn about these two restriction enzymes, and when electrophoresis is complete you will be able to analyze your gel and determine which restriction enzyme was given to your group.
