What is the Commission on Ethnic Diversity?

The Commission on Ethnic Diversity (CED), originally named the Presidential Ambassadors for Cultural Diversity, was appointed by President Hughes in 1989.  Now known as the Commission on Ethnic Diversity, our University-wide committee draws in knowledge of members committed to a multicultural diverse educational environment.  We work to increase ethnic diversity among our student population, faculty, staff, and administration and to develop strategies to diversify the curriculum. Through unity and diversity can our campus create a better learning and working environment where we all share and learn from one another.

What are the goals and objectives of the CED?

The goal of Commission on Ethnic Diversity (CED) is to create an environment that facilitates the retention, education, and recruitment of diverse faculty, staff, and students.  The Commission assists the university in meeting the needs of our multiethnic campus community.

Our objectives include:

  • Identify and promote an appreciation for diversity issues and needs, while dispelling stereotypes that may
    exist on campus;
  • Educate the campus community on cultural issues, serve as a role model for the appreciation of diversity
     and encourage diversity in the curriculum
  • evaluate the efficacy of present University programs, policies, and procedures as they affect members of
     underrepresented racial/ethnic groups;
  • Encourage recruitment and retention of ethnically diverse administrators, faculty, staff, service/academic
    professionals and students;
  • Educate the campus community of the unique contributions that ethnic diversity can provide;
  • Foster a better learning and working environment, and serve as an advocacy group bringing issues to the
    attention of the university community.
  • Provide an open environment that fosters learning from one another; while assisting students, faculty, and
    staff with the tools and resources necessary to better understand issues of diversity.
