20 + 1 Years of the Tozan Kilns, An International Wood Fire Conference

The College of Arts and Letters and the Ceramics Area at Northern Arizona University are hosting an international wood fire conference on October 11th – 14th of 2006 in Flagstaff Arizona. The focus of this conference is to continue the on going dialog about the wood fire process as it relates to ceramic art and to celebrate 21 years of our two Tozan Kilns built by Don Bendel and Yukio Yamamoto. Panel discussions include: The Tozan Kilns, The Train Gang, Wood Fire Aesthetics, Kiln Design, Ceramic Sculpture, Glazes in the Wood Kiln and Wood Firing in an institutional setting. In addition there are six individual lectures planned on a variety of topics. Please note that panel discussions and lectures begin the morning of October 12th, the Keynote Address will be given at 8pm Wednesday October 11th at the conference hotel. On site registration will be from 12:00 – 6pm on October 11th. Please see the conference programming page for the schedule and list of presenters.

On Friday October 13th at 7pm there will be three exhibition openings. The first exhibition at The NAU Art Museum and will be of all those individuals presenting and the second will take place at Beasley Gallery and will be an invitational exhibition chosen by the presenters. All attendees and presenters will receive a copy of the catalogue made for the NAU Art Museum Exhibition. The third exhibition will open at Beaver Street Gallery in downtown Flagstaff and is an exhibition of the work of Priscilla Namingha Nampeyo, a prominent Hopi ceramist. Transportation will be provided by bus from the conference hotel to The NAU Art Museum and back.
