Welcome to the College of Arts and Letters!
At its June meeting in Flagstaff, the Arizona Board of Regents
voted unanimously to approve President Haeger’s plan for reorganizing the
academic structure of Northern Arizona University. And so, on July 1, 2004, the
new College of Arts and Letters was born. The Dean of the new College is Dr.
Susan Fitzmaurice.
The design of the College of Arts and Letters represents an exciting combination
of the fine and performing arts with the humanities, and affords tremendous
opportunities for close collaboration on major projects among key academic
programs, research institutes, and outreach organizations. The College houses
the departments of English; History; Humanities, Art and Religion; Modern
Languages; Philosophy; and Theatre. The College also houses the schools of Art
and Music. Key programs including the Master’s in Liberal Studies, the
Latin-American Studies Program, and the Asian Studies Program are among the
College’s interdisciplinary programs. The College will also be home to the
important missions of the Martin Springer Institute for Teaching the Holocaust,
Tolerance, and Humanitarian Values, the Center for Professional and Technical
Writing, and the Center for Community, Culture, and Environment.
