PowerPoint in SOC classrooms

This page is designed to give you tips to using Powerpoint in the specifically in the SOC. It is not meant to be training for Powerpoint itself.

Using PowerPoint effectively in SOC classrooms

  • Always use a PC formatted disk- the PCs and the Macs will both read them
  • If you burn a CD, make sure you don’t use an open, multi session disk
  • If using a Mac to create your PowerPoint, always end the name of your file with .ppt - this will allow the PC to recognize the file type.
  • Copy the yourfile.ppt either the hard drive icon on the Mac or the “my documents” on the PC. Running a copy from the computers hard drive is faster than CD, zip, or floppy.
PowerPoint tips
  • Do not use unnecessary graphical transitions or video- this slows down the computer
  • Test your movie ahead of time to make sure it works properly. The SOC technology support staff is available to show students how to use classroom AV equipment by appointment. We will not support students’ last minute or emergency support requests if they have not check out the equipment in advance.
  • Use simple, standard fonts. The computers in the classrooms are loaded with basic font sets. Creating your slideshow on a PC and presenting it on a Mac will very often result in oversized type. Please check this in advance.
