TRAINING

LABS

- All computer labs in the School of Communication
were updated for fall 2003. This update includes increased
software security. As a part of this increased security,
you must have an SOC lab account to use any of the
computers in the open lab
- Printing in computer labs has been limited.
All Mac labs are now running Mac OSX. These systems
require a login and password which are stored on
the servers: Atlas,
and Wabez. When a user logs on to a Mac in one
of the labs, their home folder on the server that
stores their preferences and files is connected
to. If the user logs onto a different computer,
their preferences and files will move with them.
Due to the our networked home folder infrastructure,
files should never be opened directly off the server-
they should be copied to the local save which is
unique to each workstation. The new server system
limits students to 700 Megs of server disk space.

Standard lab sequence:
- Log onto system- Wabez server is connected
giving access to home folder.
- Log onto Atlas using the “go” menu
if access to fonts or classes folder is required.
These share points will show up on the desktop.
- **IMPORTANT** copy any files to be worked on
to the local save folder located on your local
hard drive (on the desktop)
- Open files from local save- DO NOT open files
from desktop or home folder. Anything on your
desktop is actually located in your home folder
in the desktop folder. This is a secure place
to store files on the server.
- When ready to log out of computer, copy file
to your home folder since the local save is not
a secure location to store files.
Help

- If you need non emergency help, go to the SOC
helpdesk. You must register your username and
password to use this system.
