Water samples are analyzed for stable isotopes (13C) and concentration (ppm C) data on DIC and/or DOC from the same vial using an O.I. Analytical Model 1010 TOC analyzer interfaced to a Finnigan DELTA plus XL isotope-ratio mass spectrometer (St. Jean 2003). The autosampler on the TOC analyzer requires that samples be filtered and collected in ICHEM 200 series 40-ml glass bottles (Cat no. 246-0040). Preservation methods depend on whether DIC and/or DOC are to be analyzed from the same vial.  Currently, we use a saturated solution of HgCl2 to preserve samples (Kaplan 1994).

Please view our protocol for sample collection and preservation.
