Science TeachersThe Center for Science Teaching and Learning is a teaching, research, evaluation, and materials resource for science faculty and students across the NAU campus, K through 20 science teachers, and informal educators statewide. The mission of CSTL is to engage educators in the quest for excellence, access, and equity in science teaching and learning. The CSTL provides leadership in and coordination of science education professional development, academic programs, and outreach activities. CSTL is responsible for the recruitment, advising, and student teaching placement and supervision for secondary science teachers. The CSTL collaborates with the College of Education and departments across the College of Engineering and Natural Sciences in support of secondary science teacher certification, including the NAUTeach program, and provides extensive curriculum resources for K-20 preservice and inservice teachers.


The Center’s vision is to be a regional leader in standards based science education through:

Science Teacher Preparation & Certification
• Science teacher preparation and certification, including NAUTeach and the Master of Arts in Science Teaching;
• Recruit, advise, and supervise science teachers;
• Place and supervise field practicum;
• Coordinate informal science education experiences;
• Maintain state-of-the-art curriculum resources and materials;

Professional Development

• Design and deliver professional development of standards-based curriculum programs;
• Offer web-based AEPA Science Preparation courses;
• Collaborations with schools and partnerships with professional development centers;
• Partner with curriculum and professional development centers;

Science Education Leadership
•Providing technical assistance in science education to campus, state, and national collaborators;
• Science education leadership through technical assistance, program design and evaluation, and science education research;
• Maintain Arizona Science Teachers Association web site;
• Provide leadership in the Arizona Building a Presence grant (NSTA);
• Sponsor the Science Leadership Academies.

As of July 1, 2003, the Science and Mathematics Learning Center (SMLC) has a new name, college affiliation, and revised mission.  The Center for Science Teaching and Learning is now associated with NAU's College of Education.  The Center will continue to be housed in the College of Arts and Sciences (Chemistry Building 20, Room 105) to best meet the needs of the five science departments involved in the preparation of secondary science teachers.
