Partnerships and Projects

The professional development team at the Center for Science Teaching and Learning (CSTL) works closely with schools and districts to design and develop proposals to secure funding for professional development projects and programs. For almost twenty years, the CSTL has successfully collaborated with Arizona schools and districts to write proposals that have resulted in more than $4,000,000 dedicated to improving K-12 science teaching and learning. We invite you to review the list of some of our currently funded projects below. Our professional development providers are always available to talk with school and/or district representatives to explore possibilities for seeking potential grant funding.

Innovative Technology Experiences for Students and Teachers

EYE-POD Project

Apply Today!

These videos were recorded at the plenary session of the  ESRI International User's Conference in San Diego, CA, July, 2009.

The Examining Your Environment through the Power Of Data (EYE-POD) project provides teachers with the means to implement interdisciplinary, technology-integrated, project-based learning modules with an Earth science focus in their classrooms. Students learn science and math concepts as they collect and analyze data in an attempt to solve a community problem and communicate those solutions through the use of geographic information systems (GIS) software.

A team of one secondary Career and Technical Education (CTE) teacher and one Science or Math teacher from the same school must apply together. Each participant will receive a $1000 stipend, online and on-site program support, the option of graduate credit, and $10,000 in GIS software site licenses, data collection devices, and books for their schools.

Training will occur in 10 day professional development institutes at Northern Arizona University’s Flagstaff Mountain Campus in June and July of 2010. NAU staff will visit schools 3 times during the year to aid in implementation of the new technology and learning modules. An additional paid week of advanced GIS training will be offered to participants during the summer of 2011.

The Northern Arizona Power of Data (POD) project

The Northern Arizona Power of Data (POD) project empowers teachers to implement interdisciplinary, project-based learning modules with an Earth science focus. The modules will teach students science and math concepts through data analysis using geographic information systems (GIS) software. Students will collect and analyze their own data to solve a local problem, and then use GIS and the internet to communicate their ideas. Support for this project has been provided by Science Foundation Arizona and ESRI.

Project PRIME

Project PRIME provides curriculum-based professional development in a collaborative setting for secondary biology teachers.

Yavapai County Math Science Partnership

This project assists Yavapai County K-5 teachers in deepening science content knowledge, enhancing pedagogical knowledge, increasing understanding of the Arizona Science Standard, and exploring exemplary elementary science materials.

Coconino County Math Science Partnership

This project assists Coconino County K-8 teachers in deepening science content knowledge, enhancing pedagogical knowledge, increasing understanding of the Arizona Science Standard, and exploring exemplary science materials.

Pima County Math Science Partnership

This science and literacy project assists Pima County K-6 teachers in the embedding of reading, writing, and other communication skills into inquiry based science and content rich science lessons and units. Throughout the project participants deepen their life, physical, and earth science content knowledge and reflect on effective science pedagogy for their grade level.
