Preparatory Coursework

EPS 605: Educational Psychology Applied to Learning
Theories and principles of learning and development related to issues and problems of teaching and learning. (3 credits)

ECI 522: Secondary School Curriculum
Provides graduate pre-service teachers with experiences and knowledge necessary to develop and evaluate curriculum plans and materials that meet state and national standards and other educational goals. Prerequisite: Admission to the Teacher Education Program. (3 credits)

ECI 565: Evaluation of Learning
Principles and techniques of assessment at the secondary level, including formal and informal assessments, interpretation of standardized assessments and legal and ethical issues related to assessment. (3 credits)

EDF 500: Cultural Foundations of Education Introduces cultural, historical, and philosophical contexts of schooling. For post-degree state certification students.

BME 631 : Structured English Immersion and Sheltered English Content Instruction
The teaching of content in English to limited-English proficient students in grades K-12 using appropriate approaches, methods and techniques.(3 credits)

Teacher Practicum and Student Teaching

ECI 508: Fieldwork Experience; Teacher Aide Lab
Field experience in a secondary school science or mathematics classroom; exposure to and practical experiences in the tasks of a classroom teacher. (1 credit)


ECI 595: Supervised Teaching Internship: Secondary
Directed teaching in secondary schools and secondary school content areas; directed and cooperative preparation, teaching, and evaluation; conferences on the theories, issues, and practices in cooperation with the classroom teacher and university supervisor. (9 credits)

Mathematics or Science Professional Content

Mathematics Concentration:

MAT 499a: Methods of Teaching Mathematics in Secondary Schools I
Examines recent trends and investigations in a selected area. Letter grade only. No repeat limit. Introduces general theories, concepts, and procedures associated with teaching mathematics in grades seven through twelve. Topics and issues related to teaching and learning of algebra and geometry in grades seven through twelve. NOTE: This course number will be changed.

MAT 499b: Methods of Teaching Secondary Mathematics II
Examines recent trends and investigations in a selected area. Letter grade only. No repeat limit. Topics and issues related to teaching and learning of precalculus, calculus, probability, and statistics in grades seven through twelve. (3 credits)
NOTE: This course number will be changed.

Science Concentration:

SCI 560: Secondary Science Methods
Development, application, and evaluation of skills needed to be an effective secondary science teacher, including instructional methods, lesson development, and application of teaching standards. (3 credits)

SCI 561: Science Teaching Techniques
Development and use of science laboratory techniques to promote student understanding of science and scientific inquiry. (3 credits)
