AZUN Program Philosophy

Projections from the U.S. Department of Education estimate that the nation will need an additional 240,000 science and mathematics teachers in the next ten years (U.S. Department of Education, 2000). The Arizona Universities Network (AZUN) seeks to meet this need by providing an on-lineteacher preparation program to supplement traditional campus-based offerings. Courses are provided online and available statewide, thereby overcoming certain barriers that restrict potential teachers from obtaining teacher certification. This program is designed to be a high-quality, effective preparation program that provides relevant professional learning experiences built into every course. In addition, the program has built in three face-to-face weekend meetings (spread over the program), where students, program instructors and administrators come together for course-related work, seminars and institutes. Courses are designed and taught by university faculty, and university resources are available for potential mathematics and science teachers to have an outstanding teacher-preparation program.
